by the patron saint of loneliness

His morning ritual
is to sit like a silhouette
against the bright neon light
of the diner

An ordinary man
with an extraordinarily sharp mind
observing the first scenes
from other people's windows

He is training himself
to not need anything
to not feel
like a pair of worn boots by the doorway

while remembering
how every house has a sound
and how the boundaries of not belonging
mean independence and relief

Pain's cruelty blushes
as the sky turns red paying respect
to the man who on his way home
picks a yellow dandelion

You pull the brakes with a WURB. Crestfallen, I leave the road we have been on together and exit onto a path less travelled. The highway never led anywhere. Adroitly serving the shit you throw at me as a refection, you taught me to anticipate poisoning. No acerbic plans in this. Just the fossil of a painful memory becoming the weapon of attention and weighing down each gentle move, followed by simplified complexity that is stopping any refreshed start in its tracks.

I know of the biodegradable core that is your banished heart. But I don't want your decaying past to be the taste of my tomorrow. The insight, a quiet arrival, is almost being scared away by the sharp sound as the drafty door of the vehicle closes, leaving you inside, as I stand in the drifting evening mist. Another night without a plan, I think, when I walk into the gloam, my matches too wet from tears to light the first lantern. Soon faded to a mere midnight silhouette, I harness the comforting silence on these paths of peace.

While I walk in meditation, the moon is slowly clearing the area under her curves, illuminating the inner strength now gleaming like a waiting key that I had almost forgotten. In the now waking light I realise: No meteoric ascent got me to this point, but rather setting one foot in front of the other, over and over again, each step an elevator to a higher ground. Or up to even ground in the first place. No other person and no technology could have done this for me. It is something solely in my power. The smell of cinnamon rolls is drifting through an open window. I walk into the store next door and buy myself a new cup - like a bird on a tree collecting building sticks from bare branches because Spring is still too far away.

How can not only I but also my experience exist?

The answer lies beyond the narrow passage out.

They will call you a black sheep, a shraminist even, as they will have no words for this atrocity.

But I'd rather be that than continue dwelling in the hell of self-sacrifice's demands.

The ravine will look beautifully serene. Like an ethereal Komorebi garden where fragments of gold and green will reflect from the surface of a little creek that will give new life to trees becoming restorative park shadows. Brambles will offer themselves abundantly, evoking memories of homemade blackberry jam wobbling in the jar with a bold 'PLOP' upon the first opening.

After the wheel will have turned.
After the world will have stopped tumbling.
After this total eclipse will be over.

Until then, even the rat that carried the toxic element will be wishing on a shooting star for the acidic ghosts of passions past to vanish.

Common Horrors

It is short after midnight when I wake up. Rain patters against the window panes of the cottage. Little streams form between rows of grapes, making the vineyard's parched grounds fertile again.

A couple of forlorn paper cups in the driveway turn into behemoth barrels for three drunk fruit flies. 18 tiny legs are desperately treading water as three pairs of wings get soaked. ... Then only 12 tiny legs are treading. ... Then 6 ...

Then, the rain stops.

6 tiny, tired legs are still treading water under one soaked pair of wings, now stone-cold-sober.

Finally the paper of one of the cups breaks, the now unfettered content causing a tsunami on one of the cobblestones. Two pill bugs, a little moth, and a spider are losing their lives. They simply were in the right place at the wrong time.

The only survivor is one fruit fly that has been washed to the shore of the third cobble to the left - one millimetre before a rain-filled pothole. Exhausted, the fly stays there until the morning. Once the early sun has dried its tiny wings, it drowns its trauma in a glass of red wine. This time, the container does not break.

When I enter the kitchen, I admire the morning sun gilding the drops caught by an abandoned cobweb outside the window. I don't even notice the tiny cadaver inside the stale wine as I pour it out of the glass and down the drain.
