If we had a penny for every time Kit Connor played a soldier called Tommy going to war, etc, etc... A Long Winter, as well as being shown at Telluride and TIFF, is getting a screening at the New York Film Festival. Interested to see if this festival run also makes the London Film Festival.

A Long Winter Andrew Haigh, 2026, Canada/U.K., 118m New York Premiere High up in the stark Mountain West in the early 1950s, younger son Mikey (Fred Hechinger) watches as his family slowly comes undone. After his brother Tommy (Kit Connor) heads off to fight in the Korean War, his mother (Caitríona Balfe) begins to exhibit signs of depression and disenchantment with his coal miner father (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and with her provincial, isolated life. One day, during a blinding snowstorm, she disappears into the wild, leaving her son and husband to both search for her and fend for themselves. This simple premise, adapted from a short story by Colm Tóibín, grows into something unexpected and rich in the hands of filmmaker Andrew Haigh (whose work includes the acclaimed 45 Years and All of Us Strangers, NYFF61), blossoming into a subtly observed tale of emotional growth and sexual awakening, its beautiful yet forbidding landscape captured in ravishing cinematography by André Turpin. With precise period detail and riveting performances, A Long Winter continues Haigh’s ongoing search for the private spaces and unspoken longings that exist between us. A MUBI release.

Had a lovely afternoon at the BFI watching a couple of episodes of Yonderland, seeing some of the actual puppets from the show and being in the presence of all six of the core cast. First time since the first screening of Ghosts back in 2019.

Elden Ring has wrapped on its filming after 6 months of principle shooting. Due out in March 2028. Really looking forward to this one. Director Alex Garland and the producers gave a special note to all cast and crew... (Note transcribed in the alt text)

At the cinema yesterday there were three trailers that ran consecutively for upcoming films... Werwulf - medieval blood, mud and guts. The Death Of Robin Hood - medieval blood, mud and guts. The Uprising - medieval blood, mud and guts. So, cinema is having it's medieval blood, mud and guts phase.

The Odyssey. Very epic and very good, but felt suppressed throughout. There are some extraordinary scenes, the visuals are sharp and spectacular, the sound rumbles through you and the acting is solid. It just misses a certain spark. Like 1917, it's technical achievement overriding the storytelling.

Watched Heartstopper Forever the moment it released this morning and I'm still in recovery. Cried, laughed, cried again. Ultimately I finished the credits with a smile as it was just a beautiful end to the series. Witnessing the motion of time is possibly the most moving part. #heartsky

The obvious thing for England and France to do during the 3rd place play off is shake hands on a deal to have only Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe score as many goals as they like with some exhibition football. All fun and smiles and push Lionel Messi out the Golden Boot top 3.
