Restoring landscape features in EU agricultural areas to boost biodiversity and ecosystem services 🌳🦋💧 LAFERIA is a project funded by the EU Commission #HorizonEurope programme under Grant Agreement No 101181492

Data mobilisation and digital analysis tools are essential for protecting European #ecosystems. Check out the Biodiversity Explorer by @bmd-project.eu to see how data-driven insights reveal and predict how land-use factors influence #biodiversity! 🌍🌱 #LAFERIA #HorizonEurope #LandscapeFeatures

What is the Biodiversity Explorer and how can you use it to support biodiversity conservation across Europe? 🌍🌱 🎬 Learn all that and more from our introductory video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqaO... Want to be part of our mission? 🤝 Join our stakeholder network: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

🌾 Understanding how macro-level demands drive #land-use change and #CarbonEmissions is essential. While models like IMAGE simulate these global shifts, #LAFERIA reintroduces region-specific solutions like hedgerows and field margins to build climate resilience. 💡 Learn more: forestpaths.eu/models

Seeing a thriving display of the critically endangered Adder's-tongue Spearwort highlights how important specific environmental conditions are for preserving biodiversity. At #LAFERIA, evaluating these ecosystem services allows us to develop targeted strategies to protect vulnerable species. 🌻🌱

Thrilling visit last Sunday to @gloswildlife.bsky.social 's Badgeworth reserve with @timnmosborne.bsky.social to see the critically endangered Adder's-tongue Spearwort, Ranunculus ophioglossifolius. An impressive display this year due to ideal conditions. #WildflowerHour @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Finding indicator species like Pepper Saxifrage shows the immense value of undisturbed, traditional meadows. #LAFERIA uses #LandscapeFeatures mapping to identify and protect these rare #Grassland habitats, evaluating their role in biodiversity to develop strategies for ecosystem restoration. 🌾💚

Steven Wright@stevenwright58.bsky.social · 2mo ago

We were delighted to refind Pepper Saxifrage in one of the PLWS ridge and furrow meadows next to Kilsby Lane LWS yesterday. This time 6 plants. As a species that grows in unimproved grasslands it's declining in abundance and is a great indicator @bsbibotany.bsky.social

💧 Many crop models underestimate water needs, impacting irrigation policies. #LAFERIA addresses this by evaluating how #LandscapeFeatures benefit yields, water availability, and climate adaptation, while developing reintroduction strategies for resilient farming. 👩🏽‍💻 Read more in the original post.

🌱🦋 This #BiodiversityDay, turning local action into global impact is more urgent than ever as we approach the 2030 #KMGBF deadline. #LAFERIA is committed to halting biodiversity loss by designing resilient, nature-inclusive #LandscapeFeatures that restore local ecosystems.

This #BiodiversityDay, let’s turn local action into global impact 🌱 Halfway to the 2030 target deadline for the #KMGBF, the world needs faster action at all levels to halt biodiversity loss, restore ecosystems & protect nature. The time for action is now. #IDB2026 #ForNature

🌡️ Extreme heat threatens 1.23B livelihoods, with yield losses tripling during drought. #LAFERIA builds regional resilience by restoring #LandscapeFeatures (LF). While we work on identifying the costs for the climate, we also look at the benefits and focus on enforcing them. #ExtremeHeat

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations@fao.org · 3mo ago

🔥 #ExtremeHeat threatens the livelihoods of 1.23B people. Agricultural yield losses can triple when heat combines with other hazards such as drought & are projected to get much worse as the world warms.    More in @fao.org-@wmo-global.bsky.social report 👉 https://doi.org/10.4060/cd9394en

🌿 Mediterranean landscape features (LF) are more than just scenery; they act as functional buffers for the soil. These natural areas, which are central to the work at #LAFERIA, sustain the biological activity that is necessary for ecosystem survival in the context of climate change.

Journal of Ecology@journalofecology.bsky.social · 3mo ago

🌿Plant canopies buffer soil functioning against climatic disequilibrium. In Mediterranean shrublands, plant patches sustain soil enzyme activity, proving vital for ecosystem resilience as plant communities become mismatched with climate 👉️ buff.ly/XBWrK99

🌡️🌡️ The alarming findings, published in the European State of the Climate 2025 report, state that Europe is warming more than twice as fast as the global average. One of LAFERIA's objectives is to evaluate the costs and benefits of landscape features in helping agriculture adapt to climate change.

🚨 Carbon farming is a powerful tool, but it only works if the rules are transparent. ⚠️ Experts are raising concerns that new EU regulations might lack the quality needed. Within the #LAFERIA, we believe that we need scientific evidence to make sustainable farming truly work for the environment.

European Environmental Bureau🍃@eeb.org · 3mo ago

#CarbonFarming could accelerate #ClimateAction in farming🙌 The #CRCF could help, but today we learned that many of the flaws identified by civil society were ignored. Without fixes, the risk of environmental harm and #greenwashing are simply too high ⚠️ Joint statement👉 eeb.org/en/library/j...

"As it stands, the rules for Carbon Farming risk overstating climate benefits while failing to protect the environment. Without adequate safeguards in place, the EU risks squandering carbon farming's potential as a genuine climate solution and catalyst for positive change." Mathieu Mal, EEB
