CFP: Critical Reappraisals of the New Deal as Cultural Enterprise In 1935, the U.S. government established Federal One, an umbrella organization under the New Deal that was the most ambitious cultural enterprise in the history of the United States. Although it barely lasted five years, the projects under Federal One enabled creative innovations that had a transformative impact on artistic forms, styles, and methods for decades to come. At a moment when federal infrastructure is under threat, this panel invites critical reappraisals of the New Deal as a cultural enterprise. We welcome a range of approaches, including but not limited to: Considerations of individual artists who were supported by the Federal Writers Project, the Federal Art Project, or Federal Theatre Project. Reflections on newly unearthed or digitized archival materials related to Federal One. Theorizations of collaborative practices or soft/hard infrastructures generated by Federal One. Appraisals of state-level projects, including the segregated Negro Units. New accounts of the demise and afterlives of the projects funded by Federal One.
