‘Birding’ has been on my unread pile for far too long and ive finally got round to it the last couple of days. Absolutely loved it @regretteruane.bsky.social.

Ex-goth, socialist, man about town. Into Memorial Device before Mary Hannah joined. Communist family history stuff. Resist moral panics. Writing a biography of Dundee Comintern agent Bob Stewart. #MDANT #JoinaUnion
Incredible shit here: the guy Badenoch is defending was sent to prison for sending racist abuse to the MP Luciana Berger. Who then did a whole series of interviews and columns talking about her criminal harassment by Nazis, in a manner intended to make listeners believe it was done by Labour members
Even I am taken aback at the new and surprising ways these people find to insult the public’s intelligence and make it more clear the only operative professional standard in force is “LOL fuck you”
When Liddle slagged off my comedy book I took it as a badge of honour as it was written specifically to be slagged off by a fucker like him. A nasty, racist sack of toxic shit who made the familiar, cynical march from liberal to far right. The world is a better place with one fewer Liddles in it.
Jude Law as Vladimir Putin in The Wizard of the Kremlin looks like Harry Enfield playing Robert Shaw in a remake of From Russia With Love.
I have just seen an advert for a Play Dead 5 CD box set and I really should be over 1980s second tier goth bands but…
So rare that you can actually look into a man's eyes and see his divorce.
They're finally admitting it
Driving the Soviet Ambassador around and spying for the USSR.
Enough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?
I want to see @mchshe.bsky.social direct ‘The Island’ by RS Thomas!
Studio execs are going to want to adapt more poems for the big screen now
World-class UK anthropology, archaeology, area studies, chemistry, classics, English language and literature, geography, history, history of art, modern languages and philosophy, among other subjects, are also at risk, and have been for quite some time now. You don't need a telescope to see it.

Today I’m writing about the Salute to the Red Army held at the Royal Albert Hall in 1943 which featured Laurence Oliver, John Gielgud, Sybil Thorndike & Marius Goring. Anthony Eden gave the closing speech and the finale was a rousing Internationale followed by God Save the Queen.
I mean, who even needs an education? Just send them straight to work for free at 14 🤷♀️
mildly funny that X is having blazing rows about Nolan’s Odyssey because he cast black people in it and Bluesky is having blazing rows about whether a noted Homeric translator’s LRB review of it misses the point or not
I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Almost as much as I enjoyed Emily Wilson’s beautifully written criticism of it.
I wrote about the Nolan Odyssey for the LRB. I'll summarize some of my main points below, in case you don't feel like reading all that. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...
Farewell Bill, most radical of the Goodies. Present at Grosvenor Square with Tariq & Vanessa. Turned his harassment by the Met into slapstick TV comedy for kids. Angry, hairy, furiously talented.
I’ve just been at the wake of one of the parents I’ve known since my 18 year old started at primary school. A lovely guy who was always a pleasure to be around. Too much fucking perspective. RIP Andrew Evans x
My partner told me she was going to London in October to see a talk by Susan Stryker. She’s also been down recently to see Judith Butler & Paul Preciado. I asked her why she was always going down to London to queer events. “Because you’re not there,” was her reply.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Odyssey but it was no Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
Haven’t seen such brutal sackings since Glen Ponder was a sacked man.
“What you on? Where you from? Want a fag? ‘Ave the packet mate!”
Christ. He’s going to send a task force in a desperate bid to cling on, isn’t he?
This is a great listen from Spymasters Podcast. Daria Santini talks about her biography of Edith Tudor Hart, A Woman Called Edith, the Cambridge Five, photography, working class lives, communism and spying. My great grandfather Bob Stewart gets several mentions. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/s...

I’ve just done a double bill of Possession and The Sheep Detectives.
Respectfully, that would be Reds, sir. That would be Reds.
The comedy film Hot Fuzz has the greatest cast of any movie ever made. Prove me wrong.
Laura Dern pays tribute to Sam Neill. “Sam was my beloved lifetime friend. He showed me the depths of loyalty, protectiveness and love, always with the driest wit. He was a true and noble gentleman, wrapped up in my dream leading man. I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant.”
Sam Neill… 😔 Watched this a stupid number of times with the kids - just so many lines that have become part of our family lexicon. 💔
