UMC Pastor, socialist, mom. Talk to me about Chicago politics, public goods and the world we want to win. Working to build a community that struggles for what we can change and endure what we can’t (yet)
I mean, Trump's president, why can't AOC be president?
Can’t go outside, can’t eat lettuce. Things are going great.
I don't want to hear any plan about the budget crisis in Chicago that doesn't meaningfully address the insanely bloated police budget.
this is 2x Chicago Public Library’s FY25 budget
Chicago can't have anything nice because of the police.

I'm going to make my kids make ambrosia salad with me tomorrow for the 4th of July and when they complain I'm going to yell, "THIS IS YOUR HERITAGE," at them.
There is no “center” in American politics. The poles aren’t fixed. There’s only moving right or left. It would help if people understood that.
I find this to be nearly universal in people in power with otherwise good politics. You cannot meet this moment if you don’t, at the very least, understand that it is naive to believe the cops are going to de-escalate or protect protesters. It’s really soured me on Pritzker, for one.
I do think some D mayors and governors are genuinely surprised when they send a phalanx of cops in to "protect people" outside detention facilities and those cops end up escalating instead. Those politicians often genuinely believe their cops are trained, able, and willing to take the people's side.
What really gets me is that this has happened literally every time a governor or mayor has brought out local law enforcement at a protest where the feds are brutalizing demonstrators. There are dozens of examples from multiple cities in less than a year.
Governor Mikie Sherrill says it was “absolutely necessary” for the NJ State Police to attack protesters at Delaney Hall last night. This was in order for NJ State Police to “secure the area outside of Delaney Hall,” “protect public safety, and avoid escalation from ICE.” www.nj.gov/governor/new...
This is so fascinating to me because we’ve been shouting for decades about the cherry picking that leads to anti-lgbtq readings of Scripture, but right wingers have been so successful at it that they’re now employing the strategy to make *checks notes* “going to seminary,” a sin.
as a seminary professor I can confirm that "being a seminarian" is indeed a unique state of sinfulness

Praying the Imprecatory Psalms in the Age of Empire
Almost 20 years ago, Barack Obama's campaign was rocked by three scathing words from his pastor. Today, those same three words feel prophetic.

In the farming community of Lupang Ramos, what is hope? Rev. Hazel Joyce Salatan shared reflections with @crbernasol.bsky.social about her piece “The Justice and Hope of the Salakot.” Full interview on YouTube soon! Order Issue 1 at our pinned post.
We like to say, "Can you imagine if we had Paul Vallas?" And, 100%, we should be glad he isn't the mayor of Chicago right now. On the flip side, can you imagine if we hadn't harassed Kim Foxx out of office? Instead we're left with O'Neill Burke and she is absolutely failing to meet the moment.
I had a baby in 2020 and, when we were able to interact with other people again, I remember breaking down in tears with how kindly people treated us. I tell my kids that it's pretty special that they bring joy to the world just by existing.
literally every day my wife or I go outside with our daughter people go out of their way to be friendly, offer aid or a kind word, no matter where we've traveled. it's nice to remember that hostility as default mode of interaction is not destiny, much as it benefits some to pretend it is
some things about becoming a parent are radicalizing in ways I expected - e.g being reminded viscerally how screwed we'd all be if childcare and other care work disappeared. but other things are radicalizing in ways I didn't - like experiencing constant spontaneous solidarity in ways big and small
My favorite drum to beat: One way to help save protestant denominations that are crumbling under the cost of healthcare for clergy is to support and fight for universal healthcare.
"Marvel Studios Moves Film Production from Georgia to UK's Pinewood Studios" "Reasons for the move include cheaper labor and studios not being required to subsidize workers’ medical expenses, as the U.K. has universal healthcare."

Rahm Emanuel is the candidate for the three people who find Gavin Newsom too likable.
I'm grateful Huerta is still alive for this reckoning. I'm wrecked that she had to carry this for so many years to protect so many people.

Great work by @minabloom.bsky.social Watching my peaceful colleagues bloodied, brutalized and violently arrested by the Illinois State Police left me so traumatized I had an acute trauma response in early January. The psychological distress is real. Pritzker and Burke have failed us.

CNN has a show with a similar line. That the problem with this country is we just aren’t talking to each other. It’s the kind of diagnosis that a toddler would land on.
