nerdfighteria's resident meteorology PhD | sometimes plays viola | migraines and ADHD and anxiety oh my | she/???/¯\_(ツ)_/¯

for all of my "yeah I can fix it if I break it" confidence I have with physical objects, I really do worry a lot more about breaking things on computers *even though I also know how to fix a lot of those problems*

It appears that between my current Project Hail Mary fixation and the newest episode of Humans that I'm reentering a more general space fixation and thinking to myself "I should apply to the next astronaut class"

I've been writing fanfic for the first time in ages (Project Hail Mary is still devouring my attention) and have had some absolutely *banger* lines, my favorite of which so far is "And then it was done. It was Friday, and the world was ending."

so I'm in the middle of listening to this week's episode of Humans and when Hank asks Andy Weir if he's ever played any of the Civilization games, that question felt very "is the Pope Catholic?"

terrible new sentence I just uttered: I need to shower now so that I stop smelling like leaky potato (for context, my roommate and I were checking if the potatoes were still good and, uh, they were not)

i spent the whole day waiting for my apartment's maintenance to come do something about the leak in our ceiling only to log into my apartment's resident portal and find that the maintenance request was marked completed at some unknown time earlier today with no notes and no timestamp

me watching project hail mary a few weeks ago: wow I feel really seen by this character and this movie me reading project hail mary right now: why am I so aggressively seen by this book and this character

my desire to write a science-y thread about tropical waves (my dissertation topic) and Cabo Verde (of World Cup relevance) is in conflict with my brain not fully functioning before noon and the fact that I already have plans in brickspace for this afternoon

I don't know if it's just the ADHD speaking but I really wish that I had over-the-air TV options for watching both final games for each world cup group instead of being stuck with whichever one the TV networks think will be more popular

I understand very little Spanish but watching the world cup on telemundo was absolutely the correct choice because it's just incredible hearing the commentators go 'gooooooooool' so excitedly no matter who's playing and it's getting me invested in matches I have only a passing interest in

so I've been on a quest to listen to all DH&J and SciShow Tangents in order, and right now I'm in 2020, and, in some incredible timing, reached the "Games" episode of Tangents where Hank did a soccer-inspired All Star parody (and other soccer factoids) which is incredible timing with the World Cup

(grad school/research things) I'm finally getting around to reading a colleague's review paper and what do you mean my work is being used as an example for one of the families of methods discussed in one section???

I've caught a few in-text citation errors when reviewing because I was familiar with those papers, and I always put in my review "please check all other references for accuracy" because while I'm not going to review every reference, I sure want the authors to do so

the responsibility has to be with authors. peer review *will* catch some and editors will catch some too no doubt but the system is barely sustainable as is. who thinks making reviewing MORE arduous is a good idea?

why have I spent so much time this evening thinking about how I could make videos explaining recent weather and climate research as a fun little side project while I apply to postdocs and jobs

the most disappointing part of getting my PhD is I can no longer use the "I'm not Dr [lastname] that's my dad" joke when random unknown scientific journals cold email me trying to get me to write articles for them (I haven't actually ever replied to those emails that way I just think it to myself)

Me: the temperature is really nice (~80°F) let's go running this afternoon! The weather: also has 40°F dewpoint and a brisk southwesterly (dry) wind The uphill sections of my favorite trail: either towards the south or west Me: *dying running uphill against the wind into the sun with a dry mouth*

So I accidentally read all of Empire of Storms in four days and I may have written one of my favorite sentences in my review, wherein I say "I consider myself something of a connoisseur of cliffhangers" because I've read and written my fair share of them but that whole book is a masterclass in them
