Nearly 180,000 Black men served in the Union Army. Another 19,000 in the Navy. Black soldiers accounted for roughly 10% of Union military deaths. A large portion of each were formerly enslaved. I imagine they gave a damn about slavery.
I often stress the importance of revision and editing to my students but as I edit my own work, I realize I have forgotten how much reorganization is a key part of revision. I feel like I have been Frankensteining several of my own pieces lately. #amwriting #amrevising

Inspired by Revolutionary Songs & Michelle Orihel's piece on Toasting, I had students write toasts or song lyrics based on Patriots' or Loyalists' perspectives. They worked in groups & had 15 minutes but they were creative, referenced specific historical themes or events & had fun. #teachingwin

Celebrating a productive and successful SMH Conference Program Committee Meeting in NOLA with some beignet bites. We had a great group and the experience ended up being a lot of fun. Looking forward to Mobile in March!
