Brenda Milner is a hero and 108!! She did a lot more than discover the hippocampus is linked to declarative memory, but that work is the most famous.
Neuroscientist Dr. Brenda Milner is recognized as one of the fundamental founders of modern cognitive neuropsychology. She proved the hippocampus is essential for forming long-term "declarative" memory (facts, names & events). She was born #OTD in 1918--she's 108 years old today! #WomenInSTEM

First official day back at work in 8 months! Feeling so grateful I got to spend so much time with the little one, while the return to work for now feels equal parts exciting and intimidating 😅
Yay, the field needs this! Excited to serve as an associate editor!
Hello world! 👋 We’re Minds, Machines, and Brains (MMB) 👤🤖🧠 a new open access journal from @mitpress.bsky.social exploring the principles of intelligence and cognition across natural and artificial minds. Submissions open this Fall! 🔗 direct.mit.edu/mmb
Check out this thread - and please RT 🙏 Shaked and Itay argue that t-test and LMMs (and their Bayesian parallels) are not adequate for testing chance performance, and suggest alternative, more powerful tests. We hope you will find this useful, especially when studying unconscious processes
Can we make objective awareness tests more powerful? In our new paper (doi.org/10.1093/nc/n...; Neuroscience of Consciousness), we introduce two tests (frequentist and Bayesian) that outperform commonly used tests, based on extensive simulations and reanalyses of published datasets. (1/9)
I'm recruiting two postdocs (or potentially PhD students) to work on projects at the intersection of cognition, neuroscience, and AI (with a particular emphasis on mechanistic interpretability). Apply here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F... and please share!

Everyone says AI will accelerate science. I don't think it will -- at least not in biology, and at least not soon. New post where I explain why, and how the productivity paradox can be resolved: blekhman.substack.com/p/why-ai-wil...
Why AI will not speed up science (yet)
You can see AI everywhere except in the productivity statistics
blekhman.substack.com
Anecdotally, it is amazing how much more productive I've been in the last 12 months! Why? Not because of AI - because I have a stable postdoc for the first time, and I'm not consuming massive amounts of time on writing job applications 😅
New preprint w/ Leo Tiokhin & @lakens.bsky.social! Registered Reports (RRs) are great for science b/c publication is guaranteed before results are known, reducing publication bias & QRPs. This feature supposedly also makes them great for *scientists*. But is that really true? 1/ tinyurl.com/4sy993rr
Career incentives make Registered Reports unattractive under realistic academic conditions

Preprint alert! 🚀 Spontaneous eye blinks are often treated as EEG artefacts. We show they can serve as temporal markers of internal attention, aligning with moments of attentional focusing in working memory. Check it out:

At the end of the term I asked my college creative wriing students to submit anonymous thoughts on AI. No real surprises: Mood ranges from resignation to despair, capitulation from embittered erosion of standards to total, feelings of betrayal from deep to furious. 1/
