Our study on the evolution of shade avoidance, a "selfish trait" in plants, over 80 years of soybean breeding history. Led by @lukecoevo.bsky.social and Emanuel Kopp, and published here: doi.org/10.1111/eva..... Great stuff!
Shade Avoidance Restricts Soybean Breeding Progress and Increases Herbivore Susceptibility
High planting densities expose field crops to competition for light, which typically induces shade avoidance responses such as stem elongation. While adaptive in natural environments, these responses...

Girls are drawing more and more women when asked to draw a scientist. How much more proof do we need? When children see women in science, they imagine women in science. 👩🧪💡 And of course, this doesn’t apply just to scientists!
When asked to draw a scientist, school-age kids in the United States are increasingly sketching women, according to a study from 2018. Read more on #STEMSTEAMDay: https://scim.ag/4qFrPON

Protecting crops with plant diversity: Agroecological promises, socioeconomic lock-in, and political levers
Plant diversification—such as cultivar mixtures, intercropping, agroforestry, and rotations at the field scale, or hedgerows, grasslands, and crop mosaics at the landscape scale—is a key strategy for enhancing pest control while providing strong ecological benefits. However, its adoption is hindered by socioeconomic barriers, including low short-term profitability, rigid agricultural sectors, and limited support from public policies. A multi-stakeholder approach at the territorial scale is essential to promote its widespread adoption.
