Before stephensi arrived in 2013, Djibouti was on the cusp of declaring malaria eradicated. In 2012, there were just 27 cases. Two years later, cases shot up to nearly 1,700... and in 2020, there was an explosion: more than 70,000 cases. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/04/u...

This is the inevitable result of politicians and the media licensing gutter racism as ‘reasonable opinions’ Relatedly, if you cannot be treated by a non-white medical professional, then you should be deemed to have refused treatment news.sky.com/story/nhs-st...

Taylor Farms salad is sold in Canada too. There was a...healthy amount left untouched on the shelf at my local Farm Boy yesterday I would appreciate a slightly more robust approach from CFIA, but perhaps they're still working out which of its 1,371 jobs to cut www.agrunion.com/jobs-cuts-at...

If I wanted to protect the most prestigious and highly paid jobs for the social groups who usually hold them I'd probably design an education system that discouraged poorer children from studying the entry qualifications for these jobs as early as possible..

If a man won't do certain work because he deems it girly, or it offends his own sense of masculinity, that is a man problem, not a job problem He's not a small child who needs patronizing. Why are we conning him into his own employment by telling him healthcare is actually very macho and strong

Instead of telling men that women-dominated workplaces are actually macho cause they get to lift old people and be strong heroes (??), we could instead ask men why their concepts of masculinity mean they exclude themselves from huge sectors of the economy www.npr.org/2026/04/10/n...

Women are getting most of the new jobs. What's going on with men?

Over the past year, the vast majority of new jobs have gone to women. One economist says to help men find work, we need to embrace ways to "make girly jobs appeal to manly men."

The best way to make women-dominated jobs attractive to men is to pay more for them. Not stupid gimmicks like telling men that care work is actually macho Men join sectors where pay and status are increasing. And pay and status increase when men join those sectors www.npr.org/2026/04/10/n...

Peter Jones argues the term 'middle powers' leads to misty-eyed nostalgia and national mythology He argues we need another term that describes what we're really trying to do - club together with other small but wealthy nations to hedge against the US thewalrus.ca/canada-middl...

My job involves working out how to fund and organize progressive movements This book charts the evolution of and connections between far right figures. It illustrates how connected they are, how they fund each other, and how their beliefs have remained remarkably untouched since the 1930s

I'm interested in finding and potentially supporting people who are interested in doing long-form writing on the big efforts in global health: Gavi, Global Fund, PEPFAR, etc. If this is you or someone you know, please make yourself known!

Looks like Labour has stormed the Greater Manchester byelection. Votes still being counted but we're told they've won in places where Reform UK and the Greens dominated in May – including all wards in Green MP Hannah Spencer's constituency. "It's a massive turnaround," says Labour source.

As every far right grifter jumps on the Ceuta incident, the people at the centre of it - vulnerable, desperate people who have been tricked, exploited and endangered for political gain - have been entirely removed from their own story

It's notable that when Belarus/Russia did this to Poland, other EU countries didn't respond by blaming Poland. They blamed Belarus/Russia. No mystery why Europe's governing conservatives are blaming the EU's only leftist prime minister.
