Just so you know where I stand on the great issues of our era: I support vertical drinking.

This is, I acknowledge, a clichéd Gen X complaint but 6Music no longer play enough alternative rock.
New post just out: "Burnham's first mistake" Splitting 14 year olds into academic and vocational paths seems intuitive. But it's a terrible idea that risks increasing inequality, and closing down options for the young people that need them most. (£/free trial) open.substack.com/pub/samf/p/b...

Happy feast of St Dominic (which begins this evening for Dominicans)!
R.I.P. Anthony Kenny. One of the greats. I first learned about Aquinas from his work.
I see the bourgeois philosophers at SEP are suggesting that there are serious problems with understanding what capitalism is.

I recall when an MP was murdered by a Nazi shouting “Britain First!”, we had weeks of molten political/media terror about the abstract concept of divisiveness and social media abuse, because that’s much more conducive to furthering their shared goals, which do not include resisting the far right.
We are at least looking down on the Rangers, if not on top of the league.

This man is arguing, in effect, for the death of unimaginable numbers of people in the global south.
(One thing, however, that the resolute readers get right is that there is more continuity between the early and late Wittgenstein than is often acknowledged.)
I really try to not find resolute readings of the Tractatus odd. But I don't succeed.
“A senior judge has accused the Home Office of relying on ‘AI hallucinated’ information to refuse an asylum claim.” It’s disturbing to see how governments use “artificial intelligence” to make decisions about a person’s right to safety.

The vocational education debate is bringing out the two contradictory strands in the British labour movement: the dour worthy types who ran Socialist Sunday Schools and people who like William Morris. If you attend solely to utility, you have missed almost everything that matters in life.
I’ve found out that if you google Zebedee the AI overview will pull through a description of the biblical Zebedee and an image of Zebedee from The Magic Roundabout.
It's worth being clear that there's a kind of inverse snobbish dislike of universities in the Labour Party. Not least in their wanting to funnel working class students into vocational qualifications, denying access to the socio-cultural opportunities of higher education.
Once excellent reason we need education for religious literacy is to combat this kind of absurd caricature of other peoples' beliefs.
There are many truly exceptional female authors, but as a writer, I feel I must say, exsqueeze me! 🤣
Just trashing U.K. science and saving peanuts. Vandalism.
#SaveJodrellBank It's been announced that Jodrell Bank Observatory, which houses the UK's largest telescope, will lose it's government funding and could close. This would be absolutely devastating for the 3000 scientists who use it in their work. It will save just £2.8m a year. 1/2
This. Also overpopulation arguments are often implicity racist, directed at the global south.
There’s a fire in a beauty spot on my native Isle of Wight. Started by idiots; spread by climate change.
To say AIs are not conscious does not go far enough. It is unintelligible what would be involved in attributing consciousness to an AI.
