A day later but… Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! This year I celebrated it talking about Prehistory to a couple of classes of very enthusiastic high school students! I also enjoyed seeing how the youngest children at the school were learning about Atapuerca and Prehistory

Hello, Our paper on enamel proteins from Paranthropus robustus has finally been peer reviewed, please have a read here: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... Paranthropus robustus has been puzzling scientists since its discovery in 1938 in South Africa, where a high number of fossils have been found.

Enamel proteins reveal biological sex and genetic variability in southern African Paranthropus

Paranthropus robustus is a morphologically well-documented Early Pleistocene hominin species from southern Africa with no genetic evidence reported so far. In this work, we describe the mass spectrome...

Incredibly proud that our paper on the #palaeoproteomics analysis of the Penghu mandible, led by @tsutatsuta.bsky.social and in collaboration with Chun-Hsiang Chang, Enrico Cappellini and co, is out now in @science.org! doi.org/10.1126/scie...

A male Denisovan mandible from Pleistocene Taiwan

Denisovans are an extinct hominin group defined by ancient genomes of Middle to Late Pleistocene fossils from southern Siberia. Although genomic evidence suggests their widespread distribution through...

🧵 Is this a Dire wolf... 🤔? No... Our @erc.europa.eu Beasts to Craft team led by Élodie Lévêque uncovered the true identity of mysterious hairy covers on #medieval #Cistercian #manuscripts - they're ... 👇

This from Adam, & French article quoting @toriherridge.bsky.social, worth reading. Colossal's "de-extinction" similar to Musk's impossible claims re colonising Mars, and all serving to reduce trust in science & scientists, while making lots of 💰 #StandUpForScience www.france24.com/fr/%C3%A9co-...

On #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience let me remind you that we are NOWHERE NEAR parity. A few examples. 1. Women are credited less in science than men. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Women are credited less in science than men - Nature

The difference between the number of men and women listed as authors on scientific papers and inventors on patents is at least partly attributable to unacknowledged contributions by women scientists.

🧬 Review by @welkergroup.bsky.social (incl @zandraselina.bsky.social @loulemeillour.bsky.social) lays out how ancient protein analysis is revolutionising our understanding of human evolution! #Palaeoproteomics can retrieve molecular data from fossils too old/tropical for ancient DNA #teammassspec 🧵

Alt text: Picture of cave mouth with three figures: Palaeoproteomics review showing how protein analysis of fossils is expanding beyond ancient DNA's limits to study Middle & Late Pleistocene hominin evolution. Covers methods from protein mass fingerprinting to detailed sequence analysis, illustrating applications in species identification, sex determination & phylogenetics.
