Last month, I had an hour-long back-and-forth with an editor about whether a sentence required a comma. It was niche! References failed us! The only reason neither of us shrugged it off after 2 seconds is that it's a rare pleasure to engage with someone who knows how to use a fucking comma.

Feeling entitled to another person's time and attention after being told it will not be on offer is always, ALWAYS the tip of the fucking iceberg, I assure you.

it's not just that means testing unfairly gatekeeps care from people on the edges of the economic goldilocks zone. the logic ripples out through culture and influences how we talk about poverty, race, and disability. we do not talk about helping people without first talking about who not to help.
