The beautiful preservstion of trilobite compound eyes will never cease to amaze me. On this little 400ish million year old Phacops you can see all the little lenses - each one a rigid calcite mineral crystal! Together they had excellent 360° vision, perfect for finding lunch on the seafloor.

A grey rock that has a beautiful fossil trilobite. The rock is rough, but the trilobite sections are smooth. One of the main features is a compound eye, made of of many lenses.

This #iNaturalist GenAI addition is so dissapointing. The team wants to "pilot" if they can replace decades of ecological expertise with generated reponses? Cool. If this is implemented, guess which experts will no longer train this dumb thing? Such shortsightedness, all for a Google grant.

the entire reason I use iNaturalist is that it’s really fun when scientists and other wildlife observers find my photos and confirm the ID using their human expertise and I get to feel like I helped a person with their research you are taking away what’s special about the app if AI does that
