The 60-year-old Catholic school teacher in Yorkshire reportedly said: 'gay and transgender people are mentally ill', and that he was 'happy' that Putin was killing 'satanic Nazis' in Ukraine. The remarks were made during a history lesson. This is... totally unhinged. 🧵

'We should all just love each other, and do it in our own way.' Our former President George Melly interviewing the, shall we say, 'spirited' Python, Graham Chapman. In an otherwise loose interview, this is a rather moving and lucid moment from Chapman on his coming out. Broadcasted in 1972.

#Onthisday in 1972, the UK's first official Pride march took place in London. Organised by the Gay Liberation Front and the Campaign for Homosexual Equality. The date, 1 July, was chosen as the nearest Saturday to the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in New York.

Humanists are leading the fight for a ban on 'conversion practices', a campaign that dates back to 1979. We've challenged Church-backed 'cure' ministries, called on government after government to act, and taken the issue to the UN Human Rights Council. humanists.uk/2026/06/25/a...

Long before the law caught up, humanists were already conducting same-sex wedding ceremonies. It was humanists who helped repeal Section 28, legalise same-sex marriage across the UK, abolish blasphemy laws, and bring the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia to Britain. 🧵

Progress, at long last. Our ambition is that no one will ever be legally forced – by a cleric or anyone else – to conceal their sexuality or gender identity. The UK Government has let this issue fester long enough. The law must be on the side of victims, not abusers.

This draft Bill has been a very long time coming. A huge thank you to Equalities Minister Olivia Bailey for getting it to this stage. We look forward to engaging constructively with Government to make sure it is strong, trans-inclusive, and free from loopholes. humanists.uk/2026/06/25/a...

#PrideMonth is a time to remember those like Turing – whose lives were marked by injustice even as they changed the world for the better. You can learn more about the humanist legacy of Alan Turing, among other pioneers, in this article by @andrewcopson.bsky.social humanists.uk/2026/06/08/c...

Alan Turing, one of Britain’s most renowned humanists, was a visionary whose genius helped the Allies win WWII. Yet despite his extraordinary contributions, he was subjected to chemical castration by the British state in 1952. This #PrideMonth, we remember him. He was born #OnThisDay 1912.

'We're showing that love between two men is just as infectious and emotional and strong and pure as heterosexual love.' Hard not to love Heath Ledger's perfect response to homophobia and hatred at this press event for Brokeback Mountain in 2005❤️ #Pride2026

From A.J. Ayer & Bertrand Russell leading the charge for decriminalisation in the 1960s, to the founding of the Gay Humanist Group in 1979, humanists have been marching, campaigning, & fighting for LGBT+ rights for well over a century. Here's to the start of #PrideMonth! 🏳️‍🌈

Another #PrideMonth, another morning browsing comments asking why it's necessary. For humanists, Pride is still a protest. Religious 'conversion therapy' is STILL happening: exorcisms, beatings, forced prayer.... Abuse – even if it is disguised as religious compassion – should NOT be legal 🧵

They call it 'conversion therapy' we call it homophobic religious abuse. Did you know that so called conversion therapy - a system of mentally and physically abusing LGBT+ young people until they 'turn straight# is still allowed in the UK? WE WANT IT BANNED. Please, share this post if you agree, and help build support for our work for a kinder, more rational society.

As #PrideMonth begins, we remember Maureen Duffy - the first openly lesbian woman in British public life and first President of @lgbthumanists.bsky.social. Maureen remains an inspiration to us. Here she is in 1966 on the BBC, speaking at a time when homosexuality was still outlawed.

A sad day today at Humanists UK. Maureen Duffy – humanist poet, author, and very first President of @lgbthumanists.bsky.social – has died at the age of 92. She was one of the first openly lesbian women in British public life, and leaves behind her an incredible legacy of work and activism.

Maureen was a hero of ours. As one of the first people to fight for lesbian visibility in this country, her courage with her sexuality transformed gay and lesbian acceptance in the UK, breaking down barriers and prejudice, and giving confidence to other women like her to do the same. 🧵
