I don't usually make posts for my Substack articles, but I think I tackled some really important stuff in this one about refusing to sell AI books versus book banning. There are also some Juneteenth and Pride Month book recommendations in there, so I'd love if you checked it out. Link in bio.

Okay, let's talk about the B&N AI books situation

For all those who have to fight for the respect that everyone else is given without questionScreenshot from Substack article saying:

The thing that really upset me, though, was the comment about banning books. You cannot compare not selling AI generated books, which are not made by humans and are made by stolen work, to banning books. There is a serious crisis in the US right now where books by marginalized groups are being systematically removed from places where kids and adults can easily access them for free. Plus, publishers are less likely to publish books that might put a target on their backs.

That is book banning. AI books do the opposite of what these banned books do. They flatten the human experience. They look at all the voices on the internet and average them into the one standard experience, with the loudest voices coming out on top. Saying that you will not sell AI books is not saying that you’re banning books. It’s saying that you are protecting authors, that you are protecting and celebrating the individuality that books uphold. That is the opposite of book banning.

my hot writing take is that playing with POV is neat and you can do what you want. present tense first! close third! first-person-direct-address with bits of omniscient third! anything is legal if you look good doing it!!
