The thing that really upset me, though, was the comment about banning books. You cannot compare not selling AI generated books, which are not made by humans and are made by stolen work, to banning books. There is a serious crisis in the US right now where books by marginalized groups are being systematically removed from places where kids and adults can easily access them for free. Plus, publishers are less likely to publish books that might put a target on their backs.

That is book banning. AI books do the opposite of what these banned books do. They flatten the human experience. They look at all the voices on the internet and average them into the one standard experience, with the loudest voices coming out on top. Saying that you will not sell AI books is not saying that you’re banning books. It’s saying that you are protecting authors, that you are protecting and celebrating the individuality that books uphold. That is the opposite of book banning.

Slowly, the shadowed forest wriggled to life. The near motionless shadows twitched, as though a sudden breeze had shaken the trees casting them.

Then they slithered.

The shadows ran over tree trunks and the forest floor alike. The intruders walked through the sunbeams that revealed the path and creek, making Aurelia's job all the easier as her called shadows skittered over to their prominent shadows trailing behind them, and Aurelia whispered a brief prayer of thanks to Solara for her bright sunbeams.

Then, with a clenching fist, Aurelia's shadows snaked around the intruders'.

Spinoza is the middle-aged High Vestra of the most renowned magic convent as far as the rainforest reaches. As High Vestra, she’s responsible for communing with the gods. Except, ever since a sacrifice gone wrong three years ago, she can’t hear the gods anymore. Fearing irrelevance, she fabricates messages they send her. When her patron loses faith in Spinoza’s competence, she’s forced to select and train a replacement.
