I write about food, mostly. Did I tell you I live in France now? deborarobertson.substack.com

As many of us begin Christmas meal prep, allow me to share the advice that my ER nurse sister puts in the chat every year: A dropped knife has no handle. Jump away. Let it fall. You can pick it up and wash it.

I know this means I may never be allowed back into the UK, but Quality Street lost its appeal when they replaced their pretty, spangly wrappers with the dull, slightly Soviet ones (I know,I know, for entirely reasonable planet-saving reasons). So it has to be Marrons glacés.

Sugar rush at Garlic&Pearls HQ: in our Christmas Corker face-off @suzanneraine.bsky.social and I compare and contrast the top seasonal treats of our nations. How sweet! Yes - it’s QUALITY STREET 🇬🇧 vs MARRONS GLACÉS 🇫🇷! A clash of titans… Which do you prefer? Any thoughts, @lickedspoon.bsky.social ?

A little obsessed with this new Channel 4 prog, B+B Challenge, where couples who've never worked in hospitality before compete to win a B+B in France by running B+Bs in the Dordogne for a week. Few of them speak any French (how will you run a business?), more than one lot serve frozen croissants.

I am, to be sure, reasonably easily irritated, but people who hurl down hamfisted and usually unsupported statements followed by "You're welcome" should be chased by pitchfork-and torch-wielding mobs.
