I thought 台本 and 脚本 were synonyms until I noticed my brain reaching for 台本 over 脚本 when translating some questions for an actor today. Which made me curious, and it turns out they are not actually perfect synonyms, and I had internalized the difference without even realizing it.

いずれも、演劇や映画などの上演のもととなる本のこと。 脚本 映像制作に必要な情報が書かれた、監督・撮影スタッフ向けの本。 台本 演じるために必要な情報が書かれた、役者向けの本。

Finally watched 3 Body Problem but couldn’t get through the first episode of the Tencent version because it was so badly machine translated. Is it like fansubs where the clunky and overly literal translation is a selling point? is that why Reddit likes that version more?

Tempura and the style of battered, fried fish used for fish and chips were brought to Japan/Britain by 16thC Iberians (in the former case Christian, in the latter Jewish). They have the same origin and are nearly the same dish, but one has immense cultural cachet and the other is routinely mocked.

Japanese tempura is derived from the word “temperance” as it originated after Christian missionaries introduced the idea of not eating meat on Fridays.

The Ghost in the Shell (and the manga) have a Motoko Kusanagi full of humor and soul. And Science Saru managed to give her a sex life that feels organic. I never realized how robotic 90s and 2000s Kusanagi was. Between this and Jaadugar, Science Saru is making the best shows I've seen all year

Anki tip for others struggling with too many decks (aka me): You don't need to make an Anki deck for everything. Focus on making/studying one and finish it before moving onto another. Bonus: They also don't need to be thousands of cards big. Stop adding cards when you feel a deck is a good size.
