When I first heard about AI being used for menus and advertisements, my concern was largely that it would be used to idealize the food and make it look better than it actually was. At no point did I imagine that restaurants would willingly put out horrific looking images of their food on purpose

This is a terrific and very generous piece. The story in question is terrible, whether or not it was machine-written, which I’d bet a lot it was. (“In those days, everyone had learned to speak in these half-truths. The real story always lived in the spaces between what was said.”)
