Spokane may be small, but this is important for everyone, and deserves national attention: The conviction of the Spokane 3 has chilling, far-reaching implications for nonviolent protest, free speech, and democracy. @hcrichardson.bsky.social @maddow.bsky.social @chrislhayes.bsky.social

The attorneys for the defense have said they plan to appeal the verdict, but before that they will ask the judge to overturn it in a Rule 29 hearing in five weeks.

The verdict in this case is appalling, and should concern anyone who trusts in the power of free speech and believes in the rights of the American public to nonviolently engage in civil disobedience. This verdict is a warning. Let it also be a wake-up call. www.rangemedia.co/spokane-3-tr...

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Write because you are going to run out of everything else: time, money, fucks to give. But you will never run out of your own bullshit. You could live forever on this unlimited fuel of emotional damage and charm. Plus people think you're funny. You're such a good writer. Live más.

I adore the way this story plays with Chekhov's Law to create tension and then, through a dazzling tour of characters and motivations, still achieves a release that feels realistic and earned. Very curious now about that staff meeting :-)

This story was born of half a dozen classroom conversations from over the years and the lingering trauma of one very disturbing staff meeting last spring. Huge gratitude to Necessary Fiction for giving this one a home.
