I buried my father yesterday. His death was not unexpected (he was 93, after all), but it is a brutal loss just the same. He was utterly devoted to his family, his faith, his community, and his profession. Visited 94 countries and every continent. A true mensch. I will miss him desperately. Z'l. 💔
Reading a #Voynich novel, and OMG! But please note that I am not, in fact, responsible for the care and feeding of the manuscript!

I had the absolute pleasure yesterday of examining the GORGEOUS al-Bawwāb Qur'an @chesterbeatty.bsky.social, written in Bagdhad in 391H / 1000-1 CE. Major thank-yous to the staff and curators (and local police...it's a long story) who facilitated my visit!
It's said that humanists & scientists have some major methodological differences to work through, but I see now that the REAL problem is footnotes vs. in-text parentheticals. This is definitely not in reference to the book I'm co-editing for which I am the lone humanist in a room full of scientists.
Who's giving a data analytics lecture about the Voynich manuscript @imc-leeds.bsky.social? It's me!
📆 Wed 8 July, 2:15 pm (Session 1235): Digital Medieval Studies, III: Exploring Manuscripts through Digital Methods. Scholars will showcase innovative workflows, including data analytics applied to the Voynich Manuscript and spectral imaging strategies to restore text legibility. 5/10

It is poignant to see that Christie's credits Rosamond McKitterick (†) for her assistance describing this extremely early leaf of the Admonitio Generalis. So appropriate for what is perhaps her final credit. www.christies.com/lot/lot-6594...

The Cotton Genesis (Cotton MS Otho B VI, 5th century) was one of the tragic victims of the Ashburnham House fire in 1731. Today, we’re delighted to release new multispectral imaging of the manuscript, allowing us to read its texts for the first time in hundreds of years. www.bl.uk/stories/blog...

Spending today looking closely at images of the gorgeous al-Bawwāb Qur'an @chesterbeatty.bsky.social (which I will see in person next month!). The navigational features of this manuscript are brilliant. Here's the transition from Sura 3 to 4 (f. 43v): 🧵https://viewer.cbl.ie/viewer/image/Is_1431/82/
An enormous loss for Medieval Studies.
Rosamond McKitterick (1949-2026) A formidable scholar, an inspiring teacher, a generous spirit and a supportive colleague - truly, we have lost one of the great ones. @sidneysussex.bsky.social @camhistory.bsky.social @camedieval.bsky.social
