I’ve seen in two culture /higher ed magazines recently the claim that the printing press engendered a crisis of authority at universities bc anyone could publish what they wanted and people could learn things without universities. This is not true.

just got an email from my (former) chair that the university has acted & the state has approved the formal closure of my department. this was done without any faculty input on the decision or the process, & has ended a vibrant, growing (!), humanities department that won teaching and research awards

My phone recently got this "Comfort view" feature that reduces color intensity on the screen-- I've had on for many weeks now and on the rare occasion I turn it off I'm appalled at how saturated everything is "normally"! How did I stare at that all the time?? (my attempt to simulate pictured below)

NASA's Artemis II crew have successfully landed back on Earth
Wow, this is incredible! I heard the astronauts saying something to the effect of "this feels like sci-fi" and I see what they mean! Even just looking at this picture I got that feeling. Can't even imagine what it would have been like to see in person!

The Artemis program has cost $93 billion to date. But that's $660 million/year over the last 14 years... Trump is asking this week for $1.5 TRILLION/year for his war. 660,000,000 vs 1,500,000,000,000 I, for one, want even MORE of our money to go to creation, not destruction 🚀🌕🧑🚀

The US doesn't have those things because politicians with the power to provide them choose specifically not to (with varying levels of support from voters). Enthusiasm for human spaceflight doesn't drive that choice.

Cannot stress enough what a joy this is to watch. Tomorrow (Monday) will be a great day to turn in if you haven't so far! The actual moon flyby is happening then!
