ICE and/or police murdered someone this morning in Biddeford, Maine. From the statements I’ve seen from local activists, I *think* the victim was a young Black man. You may already know Black immigrants are the largest non-white immigrant demo in Maine. A protest is already under way.

The Court of Appeal judgement on Palestine Action is frankly bonkers. It says PA is not "a direct action civil disobedience protest group like the suffragettes operating transparently in the open." Right: the arson, bombings, slashings etc were all planned in open meetings in Parliament Square 🙄🧵

Received the official notice of tenure at NYU, which means I’ve now been tenured in both sociology and history. I really don’t recommend that anyone else attempt this ridiculous undertaking, but I’m really grateful to my students, colleagues, and mentors who got me here.

The push for institutional neutrality, like the so-called “free-speech crisis,” was always a right wing ploy to get universities to stop pointing out obvious things like “fascists are ascendant” and “racism is bad.” It is sad that so many university “leaders” took the bait.

My alma mater @yale.edu is so embarrassing. In 2024 it adopted "institutional neutrality" to not comment on political matters; that didn't stop the President from praising a right-wing group for inviting McMahon to campus, but did stop her from saying if Dept of Edu should be illegally destroyed. 🙄

McInnis adopted a policy of institutional neutrality in October 2024, following recommendations from the Committee on Institutional Voice, which advises Yale leaders to limit public statements on political matters except in rare cases. She has said her priority is working with lawmakers behind the scenes, and lobbying has been a core part of her presidency.

Yes, that’s the issue. I’ve been trying to find a way to articulate this: to the extent that LLMs serve a purpose in education, it’s an indictment of the education system, not a praiseworthy feature of LLMs.

I was just watching some of the Bill and Hillary deposition footage and its really striking/disturbing how much the Clintons clearly come off younger and in better shape than either of our two recent presidents.
