You are not too old to learn another language. The critical period is a thing, but it doesn’t mean you can’t.
Super intriguing that my university's head of tech today asked AI users to use Qwen running on institutional infrastructure instead of commercial LLMs ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini that "incur token based charges" in order to "significantly save money." US big tech LLMs getting too pricy for HE now?
It is just completely wild to me that I translated a POETRY COLLECTION from KOREAN TO ENGLISH and got it published by an American Big 5. This is unprecedented, a historic publication. When I pitched this book to Knopf, it was a total fantasy, and now... it's out. I can't believe we pulled it off.

There are already assistive tech tools that help students with disabilities (& students without disabilities too!). Newer AI doesn’t necessarily represent an improvement over things that were already available, especially if it has a tendency to force choices or provide incorrect information.
Everything appears to be easy when you don’t know what the hell you’re doing. Education is one of those things people look at & think that the only reason the problems that exist haven’t been solved is because they haven’t tinkered with it.
For people who don’t understand how school funding works in the US: shutting down the Chan-Zuckerberg school right before the beginning of the school year & those students going back to their local schools doesn’t mean the funding shows up with them on Day One. There’s a delay.

When you prompt a model that is designed to produce text in the shape of a plan, it should not surprise you when a plan emerges
i don't like to police genre, but it's not dark academia unless somebody gets squished in one of these bad boys
Was helping a friend with their website for their business. They used an LLM for their writing & it reads like it, which is unfortunate because they’re very warm & good at what they do. I’d rather help them tighten up their own writing than undo the convoluted mess the LLM left behind.

When we don't adequately fund public universities, and instead force students to take out loans, what we as a society are really doing is borrowing money from the younger generation—their hard-earned future income—to fund a necessary project that benefits us all: building an educated society.

Commercial curricular programs tended to be set by TX & CA anyway, because they’re the largest customers. Districts never had to buy the corporate stuff —individual districts can develop their own curricula but it requires a lot of work. If you want more rigor than TX, though, it’s allowed.

At some point, could we please PLEASE acknowledge that poor signal-to-noise ratios in an environment make it hard to hear —& therefore to listen, & therefore to learn —for students who receive a large chunk of their instruction via orally-presented information? Noise pollution is a thing.
Charles Logan@charleswlogan.bsky.social · 2d agoOne more reason to consider that data center resistance can and should be IMO a site of learning and organizing for educators, students, and their families.
There is no way around this: naturalistic data is exteremly complex data, and so it requires extremely complex analyses. Of course there were a few examples of really good computational approaches to handle these data, but they were the exception rather than the norm.
