It is just completely wild to me that I translated a POETRY COLLECTION from KOREAN TO ENGLISH and got it published by an American Big 5. This is unprecedented, a historic publication. When I pitched this book to Knopf, it was a total fantasy, and now... it's out. I can't believe we pulled it off.

It’s the writers who have the worst prose and need the most intervention and additional labor from their translators who are the least appreciative of their translators and the most enthused about AI translation. It’s important to not translate them and to let them fail. There are so many authors!

I know Emily Wilson—she's a translator colleague, we've taught and hung out at Bread Loaf and been on stage together—which is why it's so amusing to see people mischaracterize her, like, A LOT. She is very chill IRL, I guarantee you she's unbothered by whatever movie or people who disagree with her.

In the 7th grade, I once left behind a folder of stories I wrote for myself at homeroom and Mrs. Plokhooy, who was also my English teacher, returned it to me with a note: "I hope you don't mind, I read these and I REALLY enjoyed them." I am now a novelist in my mid-forties and still have this note.

This! Great point. People are so fascinated by computers when they beat humans at chess or go, but those are things we only *think* of as hard, but are actually easy for computers. Translation is perceived in the opposite way, where people *think* it’s easy, but it’s actually hard for computers.

As a working biochemist, I can say without any doubt that AI tools have revolutionized much of the work that I and my colleagues do, on a daily basis. Protein structure prediction, and protein in particular, are immense breakthroughs. They are incredible, empowering and enabling tools.

Uber gives its drivers a very measly tip for driving back and returning lost items, an amount that surely does not cover their opportunity cost in lost gigs. I once left my bag in an Uber in New York and tipped separately in cash when I got it back.

Took an Uber today and left my phone under the armrest. I panicked when I realized it was gone. So I borrowed a phone to call mine to see if it was in the room. The Uber driver picked up. She had come back and was in the lobby trying to find me. There *are* good people amongst us.
