It's frustrating to see fanartists reacting to this post with "There's nothing wrong with selling fanart!" when no one is arguing that there is, it's about the time and place
Not to mention that a similar issue exists for anime cons. When I see a table at an anime* con full of random enamel pins, resin work, and tote bags, I question why they got the table over someone selling actual fanart *"anime cons" turning into general fandom spaces is a conversation in itself TBH
It'd be equally annoying to show up to an indie comics show and see prints of Nintendo characters as it would someone selling contextless prints of landscapes/cute animals/etc. If you're at an indie comics show, the focus should be your indie comic [whether it's a fancomic or not]
People simplifying this conversation into fanart VS. original media is so frustrating. If someone is selling an actual fancomic then there's no issue - derivative work is no less valid than original IP - it's about the prints/stickers/charms of it all
I'm glad people are talking lots about indie conventions! Not surprised to see many people not understand the point of my original post (this isnt a dig on fanart or your set up) but talking about SHOWS not understanding proper curation. Why are we seeing fanart print walls at an indie comics show?

the people defending this type of booth with "they need to sell stuff!" can get bent. indie comics festivals should be for people who actually care about indie comics, and if that's not profitable then so be it.

I think a lot of the “killing child predators” type of stories would be better if the protagonist was a child. I’m just saying, the story about child abuse would be objectively better if children weren’t this abstract symbol of victimhood and actually centred in the narrative.
