My department decided to admit fewer students for next year due to all of these uncertainties. The long-term viability of our graduate programming now seems unclear. Training the next generation of scholars is one of the best parts of my job and a core mission of R1 institutions. Dark times indeed.
This is going to go on at many universities - the uncertainty will lead to fewer graduate programs. It will hobble scientific research which appears to be the goal.
