Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts are amazing even now. He animated the sequence by himself for more than four months -- without computers or even an easy way to check his work. We're looking into how he did it: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/how-ray-ha...

There's something sinister about Microsoft shutting down their 3D viewer. I used it for YEARS to download public domain models and just have fun learning about 3D objects. It helped me learn 3D animation when I was in High School... and it's obviously another casualty of AI.

With all the praise for Sam Neill's work going around in the wake of his passing I wanted to throw in In the Mouth of Madness which is not only my favorite John Carpenter movie but the best Lovecraftian horror movie ever made IMO. It's a great film anchored by his flawless performance.

If the nightmarish ethics of AI in the arts make you aware of anything it should be that you, the artist, are not comfortable with exploitation in your work. The sick feeling you get when you think about the outsourcing that AI thrives on, should be the same when you think about mass-produced merch.

An indie filmmaker guy tried to justify using AI storyboards to me on his short film, so asked him why he wanted to outsource his soul... and he didn't understand the correlation. I find storyboarding not only essential but enthralling. It brings me such joy to thoroughly storyboard. Fuck you.
