in fact, the term was coined in 1975 and was a major topic in 70s feminism and in the labor efforts of women in the 9to5 and other movements in the 1980s. (and the movie 9to5 was major hit about the problem then!) and then another huge wave after Anita Hill in the early 90s. feminist history matters
Melissa Jo Peltier@melissjpeltier.bsky.social · 4w agoThere was a minor “me too” movement back in the early 2000’s when sexual harassment first came out as an actual problem. It faded away. I always knew “Me Too” would as well. Not enough men see women as human beings yet.
Maybe it's the Chicago girl in me, but I think you can unabashedly want to build power and still bristle at "machine." That word historically means things like, parts of the city that vote against you don't get services. Mamdani is much more like Harold Washington, who broke the Chicago machine.

(The answer to grade inflation, btw, isn't "tougher" grading. It's recognizing that grading, especially letter grading--not a very old system--serves employers but not students. It incentivizes cheating & corruption. Other evaluative frameworks are possible.)
I just learned that the term "carbon footprint" was developed by BP to offload responsibility for climate change onto individuals. Something like that's happening in higher ed with AI. Institutions capitulate or dodge; students are submitting; & they believe it's their individual failing. 7/
When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.
This seems pretty persuasive, which means we should be panicking a little less about being replaced with AI and a little more about what will happen to our retirement savings. (Would that my younger self had picked the defined benefit option! learn from my mistake kids)

I teach at an open admissions college so there is no question of preference in admissions. They're going after an enrichment program that does things like peer mentoring & is open to all but focused on the particular needs of Black male students. this is who they are
