I really deeply enjoy the sort of friendships you make at annual festivals or markets, and the great sense of joy to be borne upon the tide of people at these gatherings. The sense that we all made it another year. The pure joy of one another's company and presence.

Do you know what has been catching me from the periphery of my grief? How lucky we were. Both of my grandfathers passed within a week of each other, of age catching up to their natural processes, in decent care conditions. Gazans have been losing entire limbs of family trees in a flash.

For those keeping score at home, I have lost both of my grandfathers in the space of almost exactly a week. Nothing feels real right now.
