If I hear the first I will automatically take it as "you don't actually want me there. you're just inviting me because you HAVE to. Not because you want me there." The phrase "I want you to come if you can" feels they genuially want me around and actually inviting me because they really want to

People with trauma histories often interpret neutral cues as negative. "You can come if you want." sounds to them like the person doesn't actually want them to come. Affirming that you want them there helps remove any doubts.

You tell me you have a problem with something I did. I apologize, despite the action not really being bad in my eyes. All is well. I tell you I have a problem with something you did, suddenly theres blow up. An argument. Words in mouths, insults, blame. Haaaaaaaaaaa. 🫩
