Many aspects of human anatomy are just “good enough” solutions – functional, but far from perfect.
The human body isn’t a masterpiece of design – it’s a patchwork of evolutionary compromise

Been talking about this for years: Skills wheels, compulsory team teaching, generic content that anyone can cover, modeled on Starbucks and stripping out the content of degrees to avoid a “single point of failure” (that’s management-speak for an academic off sick). This is how you kill HE.

I miss this silly Billy so much when she's not around, even though she's a goofy sassbag, contributes nothing to the rent, and takes up the whole bed #dogsofbluesky
Happy my abstract has been accepted for the @slsauk.bsky.social conference 🥳 I’ll be presenting on anatomical imaging: exploring how images of cadavers are managed, & how gaps in law & guidance leave decisions to individual's ethics & morality. Grateful to contribute to such important conversations

A thoughtful new short video from BBC Scotland highlights the importance of body donation with clarity and care. Scottish anatomy has a remarkable way of getting this right and Viv is the ideal voice to guide the public through such a vital, often misunderstood process. www.bbc.co.uk/videos/cd0kv...
What happens when you donate your body to science?
Human bodies have been studied and dissected for thousands of years, sometimes to extreme lengths. But what happens if you donate your body to science now?

11am on a Saturday, with little interest in starting the day. What a life. What a long way from the streets.
Really interesting piece. I'm a super recogniser and have been involved in such studies. I must say comes in handy for taking a register mentally just from looking at faces in my class or lecture of 100...
Super-recognisers literally look at people differently.
Brill day yesterday at @cendeathsociety.bsky.social I was made to feel so welcome & had great conversations with so many death scholars, each bringing such different perspectives. The “Death during conflict” talks to end the day were a real highlight: powerful, insightful, and incredibly moving.
Stunning historical anatomical illustrations, I love the overlap with the visuals of plants and phytology, how botanical these are - the kidney like a seed pod, and the bronchial tree like some sort of ivy or bramble 😍
History of Anatomy and Surgery 32: Section of the Kidney and the Lungs, 1651 from Nathaniel Highmore, "Corporis Humani Disquisitio Anatomica", Tab. IX, p. 83, Tab XII, [p. 132], Shelfmark: 2 Med 85, Staats- und Stadtbibliothek Augsburg, Germany. #CSMBR #MedicalHistory #Anatomy
Really excellent talk, Emily @emilymayvine.bsky.social , thoughtful and thought provoking, I learned so much! Thanks for sharing online IHR and allowing so many more people to engage with this great work.
A quick reminder that Dr Emily Vine @emilymayvine.bsky.social will be speaking TODAY on 'Birth, Death and Domestic Religion in Early Modern London' from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm in the Wolfson Room (NB02 at the IHR) and online, via Zoom! ✨ www.history.ac.uk/news-events/...
My article about why we should keep the names of dusty crusty old white men out of anatomical studies....
Why is your ankle named after a Greek hero and your uterus after a Renaissance anatomist? The answer says as much about power and memory as it does about medicine.
My talk on the unknown historical silent teachers of the Anatomy Dept @bristoluni.bsky.social and a project reconstructing their faces at @arnosvalecemetery.bsky.social has been moved to 3rd December. More time to grab your in-person or online tickets! arnosvale.org.uk/bringing-the...

Is it just me or can some books only be read in certain seasons? The summer / autumn transition, changing of the leaves, alive but w/ heaviness in the air & a change to the textures & sounds of the landscape has me really reaching for Max Porters book 'Lanny' & another visit to Dead Papa Toothwort
On World Anatomy Day, we honour the gift of understanding the human body—its design, resilience, and vital role in life. Studying anatomy is to witness nature’s quiet genius. Most sacred are those who donated their bodies, their silent generosity shaping so much of what we know about ourselves.

Cannot express how excellent the spicy tantanmen ramen, with sides of crunchy chicken karaage and the show stealing crispy sichuan aubergine, were yesterday from Tomo no Ramen in Old Market - a stones throw from the centre and a must visit for anyone visiting 😍

Today is World Mental Health Day, a reminder that caring for our minds is just as vital as caring for our bodies. It's OK not to be OK; 1 in 8 of us live with some form of mental health imbalance or disorder. Today, be gentle with yourself and others, everyone carries something unseen.
