How will UK HE recover from this? Disastrously shortsighted decision-making that is dismantling the very infrastructure of the humanities, and threatening the livelihoods of scholars and teachers who deserve so much better. Senior managers, what are you doing?

East Asian Studies is being gutted at Sheffield - all staff at risk with 8.6 FTE proposed to go (a third of us). Biggest cuts in Chinese and Japanese Studies. We’ll be taking a few days to process. Solidarity to Materials and Chemistry colleagues who are also dealing with similarly bad news.

And this comes after the People and Money fiasco (although - this is still ongoing... it still doesn't work properly!). The same management team were in charge of that, too. But never any mention of overspending on rubbish database software when it comes to rising costs. www.bbc.com/news/uk-scot...

Edinburgh University's contract with its supplier Inoapps will rise from £25m to £33.5m.

Missing from the coverage of redundancies at Edinburgh: this was done in such a haphazard, uncoordinated way, there are now core teams who have gone from 5 people to 1 with no change in workload or pressure and huge loss in knowledge of institutional process. www.heraldscotland.com/news/2576321...

Hundreds of staff leave Edinburgh University amid cuts drive

According to the university, 345 of these departures were the result of a targeted voluntary severance (VS) scheme run by the institution in 2025.

"Edinburgh held 12 contracts and received 26 documents from Nous or related entities between January 2022 and September 2025. As early as February 2022, it had provided the university with a “draft vision” and a “strategy and roadmap” report."

The consultancy Nous takes hundreds of thousands of pounds from universities, leaves the exact same path of destruction everywhere, and keeps trying to avoid transparent contracts. We’re urgently need control over consultancy spent in #UKHE, @bphillipsonmp.bsky.social
