London based Computer Programmer (at @restate.dev). Kubernetes, Golang, Rust. Metal. Fantasy fiction. Follow me for updates on when it's Italian week at Lidl, black metal, whining about being unable to run and fantasy book reviews nobody will read.
I finished Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb, book 1 of The Liveship Traders and here is my review. I liked it, it's long, it feels like a setup book for the series. It's surprising and strange and I feel like in less expert hands the strangeness would come off as silly. Curious to read on.
I'm not saying you should do what he's been doing, but all I'll say is that he looks pretty good for 48. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

Espresso machine out of action for a few days until I replace a gasket. Using a bialetti or cafatiere until then. It's gonna be rough. Bialetti today, something must be wrong with it, I couldn't possibly have drunk this everyday once upon a time, it's disgusting
Today is one of those days that the news cycle has me googling who some celebrity is. Today it's Jared Leto
Wow, how have I never noticed this before? π₯π€πΏ
I'm 80% of the way through Ship of Magic and it feels so loooong. Having read the Farseer trilogy, I trust I'm in good hands, and I know it's all building up the characters so she can break my heart a million times over the coming books, but oh boy it just goes on and on and not much happens
My wife's 12yo nephew is visiting us for the week from Germany. Both kids are super excited about it but my ~5yo son is loving having his own personal, in-house Minecraft consultant
I remember about 20 years ago in Melbourne I heard of this new restaurant delivery service, noticed it was quite expensive, thought "it probably has to be as there's a service, staff, riders...". It'll never work I thought. Here I am spending Β£30 on a Deliveroo burrito what the fucking fuck
Fed up with crappy mic audio on Linux for work calls I got an Antilion ModMic Wireless which I can just snap on and off my Bluetooth headphones (Sony ULT WEAR). Great purchase, highly recommend!
How did Shabana Mahmood keep her Home Secretary job in the new cabinet omg π€¦ I guess the far-right anti immigration stuff is part of the appeal to win back racist labour voters that went to reform?
I feel like acerbic comments directed at people commenting on The Odyssey movie but not knowing about the original, or slightly misunderstanding it, is what Bluesky was built for
Pretty pleased with how well this little hack worked. Was able to record a few tracks and use some CPU-intensive effects. Nothing musically interesting just to stress test it a bit. No latency issues. Was expecting to have to go direct ALSA but Pipewire was fast enough
Got Reaper to run on my pure Wayland system by containerising it alongside its X dependencies. Introducing "cheaper", containerised Reaper: github.com/lukebond/cre... It's just a Dockerfile and some bash scripts but since I'd thought of a good name I had to publish it like it was an actual project

I think it's been about 20-25 years since I last did this (not v11 obviously). I'd forgotten about Windows buttons always having the alt-key shortcut underlined. So quaint!

X is a fascist propaganda website owned by the worldβs richest man who is responsible for the deaths of millions of non white people. He regularly peddles explicitly neo-Nazi viewpoints. And yet, the political and media elite continue to use his website and mock those who use the alternative. Sad!
The progressive version of Twitter offers a world of vicious, sneering odium that only those who see themselves as kinder humans dish out π https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/07/03/is-there-anything-more-pathetic-than-a-bluesky-user/?WT.mc_id=tmgoff_li_pathetic-than-a-bluesky-user/
"Unknowingly" haha. Anyone prepared to eat the "elephant's foot" cannot honestly believe it's anything resembling meat, let alone lamb

There is someone in my coworking space named Verity. She could be either a Farseer or a Forkrul Assail.
The Framework philosophy of "you should be able to fix your stuff" is great and all but it kinda relies on you not sucking at it. I've had a few problems with this laptop that are entirely self-inflicted, related to the assembly. Eg. This keyboard/touchpad input cable should not have this 90Β° fold
Got my ticket for Wolves in the Throne Room, Worm and Final Dose in November π€πΊπ²πΈ
Been reading a bit about black metal guitar sounds; guitarists setup and effects etc (treating myself to some pedals). One of the most fascinating first me is Ulver's trebly guitar on Nattens Madrigal. In all the years I've never heard anything like it. Pissed off hornets in a tin can. Insane
New Mork Album is good! Like a less silly and more polished Taake.

I'm almost ΒΌ through Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb. I'm not loving it, even if I appreciate her mastery with characters. But it's a big book and I know she's building things up for emotional payoff as she does so well. That's what I'm hoping for anyway
