I literally would buy multiple pairs of shoes from Payless Shoes yearly in my teens/20s because I could barely afford the $20 for them at Payless. Those shoes would begin falling apart and wearing out within a month or so - requiring another $20 to replace. My $150 pair lasted nearly four years.

I don’t care about Sam Vimes! I’m saying that as a description of actual dilemmas faced by consumers, “boots theory” fails! I’m sure it works great in literary context but in real life you usually can’t save money by buying more expensive stuff. It’s a common idea but not often true.

Vimes took the view that life was so full of things happening erraticaly in all directions, that the chance of any of them making some kind of relevant sense were remote in the extreme. - Terry Pratchett, Feet of Clay

Bluesky oldheads will remember that brief period of time when the conservative trolls tried to storm the place and were flummoxed by the idea they would have to organically grow an audience and that someone who didn't want to talk to them could nuke every interaction they ever had from orbit

The phrase “Someone ought to do something” was not, by itself, a helpful one. People who used it never added the rider “and that someone is me”. - Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

We were talking about how much vegan cheese has improved over the past few decades and one of my coworkers blew my mind by saying how she uses vegan products to keep meals kosher. I haven't cooked for anyone kosher in ages but I am still agog over the idea.

RFK Jr blames the recent measles outbreak on COVID lockdowns. that means RFK Jr thinks measles take 6 years to develop. that also means RFK Jr thinks protecting yourself from COVID leads to measles. and that also means RFK Jr is a dumb motherfucker.

Update #2 Was able to afford school supplies for step son and next target is gym shoes This week's sponsored so far volunteer tasks are sorting and packing a food banks freezer, chopping vegetables for 5 hours for a feeding the homeless initiative (burrito brigade) and pulling tires out of a creek

Tossing this concept out
If you want to hire me to do an hour or more of volunteer work of your choice if it exists locally I will literally trade my labor for financial aide and putting it back into supporting the community , and '1 document it

“That's not fair, you know. If we knew when we were going to die, people would lead better lives." IF PEOPLE KNEW WHEN THEY WERE GOING TO DIE, I THINK THEY PROBABLY WOULDN'T LIVE AT ALL. - Terry Pratchett, Reaper Man
