Blue-cheeked Bee-eater becomes my 300th island bird after dropping back to 296 with the AviList update! What a bird to do it with! Was a nice surprise to see it hunting for bees as we drove past the fence at Burray! Not where Id of predicted it’d turn up! #OrkneyBirding

With almost all grey squirrels now removed from Aberdeen City, read our new blog to find out what day-to-day life looks like for our North East team, and how they stay motivated when there’s (hopefully!) nothing to find… scottishsquirrels.org.uk/2026/07/31/l... 📷 Raymond Leinster
The #Cairngorms wildfire looking a lot better this morning after another dose of heavy rain overnight and earlier!
Never thought I’d see one of these moths in Highland, a Dark Spinach from Coul Links yesterday morning! #teammoth
After a slightly chaotic evening glad to wake up to see some rain falling. Tomorrow morning looking good currently for a decent amount, the only thing that’s going to put out the wildfire now given the size of it!
The #Cairngorms wildfire has flared up again today, as big as it ever was and an incredible plume of smoke drifting west on the strong, gusty winds!, turning northwesterly overnight...
I’ve had some quality insects over the years in the polytunnel but decent birds have been thin on the ground until today, when a Snipe walked out of the polytunnel! 😂 #highlandbirds 🪶
NASA live fire map showing the #Cairngorms wildfire now close to Ptarmigan restaurant (red cross) at the top of Cairngorm
The #Cairngorm wildfire looking south with Bynack More on the left and Meall a' Bhuachaille 2/3 of the way to the right, wind picking up now and several days of northerlies forecast
Surely only a matter of time before they figure out the Skye road bridge!
Here's what our squirrel sightings map looks like halfway through the year! If you've spotted a red or grey squirrel, particularly in the areas without many dots, let us know! You can add your squirrels to our map here: scottishsquirrels.org.uk/squirrel-sig...
"City relieved" = Burnham's government won't challenge the power of the bankers, or tax their wealth. Who is choosing our politicians - the people or the banking sector?
Amazing twitch across to Papay with the @northronbirdobs.bsky.social crew for an outrageous bird. The spectacle of it roosting at Hundland was a sacred experience for the birding disciples. #birdingorkney
Big thanks to Ulf Berthelsen for amazing news about the ringed Little Tern I saw on Barra last week. Turns out it was ringed on 30th March 2025 4635km south of the Isle of Barra at La Langue de Barbarie National Park, SENEGAL! #birdingscotland
A nice little video of the bird just before it went into roost. #OrkneyBirding
and an image from Meall a' Bhuachaille looking southeast, the firefighters have done an amazing job keeping it out of the old Scot's Pine area around An Lochan Uaine at the bottom of the image! #Cairngorms
Image from earlier today showing the wildfire on the RSPB Abernethy reserve, started along the path between Bynack More and An Lochan Uaine and then headed towards Cairngorm #Cairngorms #highlandbirds
A wildfire looks to have started on RSPB Abernethy, a hot day today and tomorrow forecast and then northerly winds, not ideal! #highlandbirds
If Carlsberg did trips home from the pub! Osprey doing loop the loops whilst carrying a fish tryin to impress the female sat in a tree below him! Sound up 🔊 #highlandbirds

Timed it just right walking past this Bird Cherry which was literally raining Bird Cherry Ermines off it! #teammoth
An alert from a friend in Gtr Man with news of 210+ Common Scoter NW over Bury at 21:18 saw me abandon the World Cup Football to spend 1.75hrs scanning the sky from the garden in Feniscowles, Blackburn. It paid off big time with some superb Scoter flocks heading west 22:22-22:49. #LancsBirding
I had a few thoughts on the results of last years Dotterel survey that I was going to make but then realised the one glaring omission, when are Dotterel predicted to be extinct as a breeding bird in Scotland? Below line of best fit through the last four surveys - answer around 2030, in four years!
Some years ago (1993-94) I was lucky enough to spend 2 summers surveying Dotterel in the Scottish Highland (pic under licence, tent in distance!), special birds, females can lay >1 clutch for diff males (polyandry), males provide all parental care. Sad to think of mountain plateaux without them:-(
“Across the surveyed areas, only 33 males were recorded, which extrapolates to an estimated total UK population of 112 breeding males. This represents a substantial 89% decline from the estimated 981 breeding males recorded in 1987/88.” #highlandbirds
Latest survey reveals that Dotterel have declined by 89% since monitoring began in 1987/88 Dotterel's resilience to climate change could be supported through limiting disturbance by people and dogs, and managing grazing Read a summary: www.rspb.org.uk/whats-happen... 🪶 🧪 @naturescot.bsky.social

Never thought I would get one of these in the garden in Strathspey!, a Small Mottled Willow and a really fresh one at that. First VC95 record 🥳 #teammoth @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
and a video of the Laughing Gull enjoying the summery weather on Skye! #highlandbirds
Just relocated the Skye Laughing Gull along coast at Tobar Asheig!, finally a Highland tick this year after the pain of the Little Swift and Collared Fly!! #highlandbirds
Managed to see and photograph the Laughing Gull found by Martin Benson at Harrapool today. This is a first for Skye and a great find 🤩🥳 #skyebirds #highlandbirds #birdingscotland
