A discarded SpaceX Falcon 9 hollow upper stage is on a high-speed collision course with the moon after drifting in a chaotic orbit since January of 2025. Weighing nearly 9,000 pounds and stretching 40 feet long, the hollow upper stage will strike the lunar surface near Einstein Crater at a blistering 5,400 mph—seven times the speed of sound.
This collision will take place on the Earth-facing western limb of the moon on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at approximately 2:35 a.m. EDT (11:35 p.m. PDT).
The explosive crash is expected to gouge out a brand new crater measuring 90 feet wide and 16 feet deep, instantly blasting a massive plume of over 2.2 million pounds of lunar dust into space.
While the moon is constantly hit by thousands of natural meteors and space rocks every single year, this upcoming collision is only the second time in human history that a piece of abandoned space junk has accidentally tracked toward a crash on the lunar surface. Because this crash involves a known, exact mass, traveling at a known speed, astronomers are using it as a controlled laboratory experiment. It will help them calibrate how they calculate the energy of natural asteroid strikes. By studying the massive plume of dust blasted into space, planetary astronomers can analyze the chemical composition of the moon's subsurface soil without having to send a costly drill to the site.
The last time a human-made object accidentally crashed into the moon was on March 4, 2022, when a rogue, unguided rocket booster slammed into the lunar far side. It drifted in a chaotic orbit for eight years before striking the moon. It hit the far side of the moon, creating a unique "double crater".
Before these recent accidental space junk incidents (2022 and 2026), all other human-made impacts on the moon were completely intentional (the Apollo missions from 1969 to 1972 
and the LCROSS mission in 2009).
