On my morning walk I was startled by a cyclist stopping suddenly and shouting to his partner "Holy shit Rebecca! Look at that huge fucking sycamore tree!!" (our local ancient celebrity). He apologized for yelling but it was really delightful.

At the pond yesterday, saw two big great blue herons flying and hanging out by the water with two littler great blue herons 😍
Various feelings about the new NYT piece on native plant gardening (positive and some negative) - but one complaint is that the author refers consistently to Doug Tallamy as "Tallamy" and to Cindy Tallamy as "Cindy". I double checked - she does indeed have a last name (like most women!)

Typically I do a pretty good job managing my emotional state in regards to the biodiversity crisis but I found an emerald ash borer outside my house yesterday and I'm feeling a bit crushed about it to be honest
Today on my half-mile walk to the bus stop I stepped over five "ant wars" between pavement ant colonies. I saw four yesterday as well. They are most likely Tetramorium immigrans. This species is also parasitized by another ant species. It's a brutal time of year to be a pavement ant!
