Infrequent writer of short fiction. Frequent editor of romantic lit/ erotica. Lover of Indie games, musicals, Magic: The Gathering, and fucked up little guys.

‘References: The Set’ will eternally turn me off regardless of the subject matter. The more winking names of cards, and direct references to lines of dialogue via flavour-words for abilities, the more my eyes roll back into my head. It’s just so boring and lazy.

Piloting or playing against a Volrath, The Shapestealer deck is the secret tech to get better at magic rules interactions and timing windows because if you don’t you will simply combust mid-flight and crash down to earth, remembered as nothing but the smouldering wreckage you left behind.

The best way I can explain this is, while I know like 80% of non-limited-focused magic cards/ whole sets are built to appeal to commander players now, whenever it’s LITERALLY just for-commander design they turn me way off. I like cards best when they’re at least mildly playable in other formats.

I’m getting old and bitter, I don’t like the new mystery booster legends. (Admittedly, a lot of it comes from not liking commander draft, and not liking unique [legal] cards in an ostensibly extremely limited product. I also don’t like the legends they put in jumpstart most of the time)

I’m gonna start walking more because I’ve been told not walking much is probably part of why my brain has swapped to ‘very bad’. Also might help my other problems, I might find a dollar on the ground every few days!

Beat it late last night. Great fun. Started playing Eternal for the first time ever. Immediate thoughts after 1 level: gunplay still very smooth, and I like knowing what you’re getting out of glory kills/ specific attacks. Don’t like the hub much, and feels like there are a few too many enemies.

Replaying Doom 2016 for the first time in a long while and realizing that I THINK I only ever played it on controller before now, and I can’t even imagine what that was like at this point Anyway, game’s still impossibly good. Also shockingly buggy in regard to environmental physics, which is funny

I’ve been involved in a distressingly high number of corporate discussions about branding/ marketing/ employee loyalty, and every other bit of hollow garbage you can imagine, so know that I’m being serious when I say whoever at WotC decided on calling it ‘Booster Fun’ is a lizard wearing a skin suit

Backrooms movie asks us the question: what if someone made a movie out of the backrooms! And it was pretty good! Partially because it’s actually edited, but really because it didn’t have like 95% of the annoying baggage that usually makes the whole thing such a slog to read.

Do you have a decklist you think could hang with a typical Spike Feeders casual game? Drop a Moxfield link and sell me on it in a single tweet. I will play (at least) one of them posted here before the end of the year on a video or stream.

We in those real posting hours* *Anxious and can’t sleep because no money + distressing gut troubles + massive albeit slow loss of faith, less in humanity on the whole and more in our little socialized clique-clusters.

Thinking about folks’ differing relationship to critics/ critique in general lately. I’ve always had a hard time relating to intense reactions to either, because the main value I find in them has little to do with determining quality, and everything to do with experiencing external points of view.

The silver lining, if you’re down on Universes Beyond in Magic and you’re worried it will have a negative effect on DND, is that DnD is completely immune to those issues! Because it’s a bad game that hasn’t had a real identity in a decade 😎 And with that, my monthly DnD slander quota has been met!

Sometimes I wonder whether or not the Phyrexian Plotline being handled quite poorly is one of the main reasons I don’t find (well handled) Universes Beyond stuff repellent. Magic’s much-touted arc rising shakily and then ending with a poorly considered fizzle makes it difficult to pine for more.

I used to think people were exaggerating about 18 to early-twenty-somethings on social media being overtly and brutally terrible at engaging with the media they’re ostensibly obsessed with, but no. No that’s happening, and it’s finally started being shown to me by algorithms, and now I want to die.

Was going through a bunch of my older EDH decks, primarily to see how I chose to balance them a few years ago VS now (I was just starting with a new group and wanted to make sure I wouldn’t steamroll) and apparently my strategy for my Volrath deck was ‘no tutors and a mana-base worse than a precon’

Odyssey was quite good. Some changes in adaptation were mild to significant losses, but there were some changes that allowed for a relatively new take on elements of the story. Some really great scenes, some mediocre portrayals of events, but basically everyone was giving their A-Game.

Not for nothing, but if you’re recommending your favourite Isekai and you have to add a caveat along the lines of ‘except for the part where the main character is basically a pedophile’ I feel like there’s a pretty serious disconnect going on.

No matter how much I loved both these games tho, I really hope Supergiant goes back to experimenting with weird shit again. Hades/Hades 2 are by far their most polished and successful games, there’s no denying, but I’m just imagining something that made me feel like Transistor did the first time.

All that said, I love these two games so much. They’re really fun, and the honestly genius decision to tie character/ story development to gameplay experimentation and breadth is so goddamn smart. O’ e got maybe another 5-10 hours of Hades 2 before it’s done-done, and I’ll be sad to see it go.

Hades and Hades 2 both have some of the same problems, many of which crop up if you ‘beat the game’ a bit too quickly based on expectation. Dialogues that don’t make sense in context sometimes trigger, events get piled up behind each-other so you have to do many runs to trigger what you want… (cont)
