Sometimes, I search for things that don't make any sense, just to see what comes up. Like, I'll be in my grocery store's online catalog, and I'll type "database," and it comes up with a stainless steel whisk.

A picture of a whisk. Underneath, it says:

$8.38 each
Kitchen & Table by H-E-B Stainless Steel Whisk, Each

John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt. You're not going to believe this, but his name is my name too. We've been looking for an explanation for this strange coincidence, but all we get is people shouting at us, over and over.

If you use the Fork Git client, and also Unity, if you're having problems opening your projects right now, there seems to be a recent issue with the latest version of Fork that is interfering with Unity opening. For now, you'll need to close Fork when you open your project.

I don't know why Unity puts that close button in the upper right corner of their launcher. When you're opening the editor, and it hangs, that button just sits there, laughing at you contemptuously, knowing full well that you're going to have to kill the process, instead.

A picture of the Unity 6 launcher window. It is stuck on "Compiling Scripts" with a full progress bar. There is a useless close button in the upper right of the panel.

What's your favorite kind of space combat in videogames? Slow combat where you order your crew around? 3D dogfighting? 2D dogfighting? RTS-style squad combat? Complex turn-based space combat?

I hate it when restaurants use an LLM to generate their food descriptions. No human being would write the phrase "the richness of turkey bacon."

A savory twist on a classic, our Gobbler's Delight Croissant combines the richness of turkey bacon, scrambled eggs, and melted cheese, all wrapped in a flaky, buttery pastry. A satisfying and filling breakfast treat that's sure to please even the biggest appetites.

Programmer productivity naturally declines over the course of a project, because the difficulty of interpreting pre-existing code and preserving existing functionality increases. I am curious whether this effect is directly proportionate with codebase size, and what other correlations might exist.

I've seen the media get this wrong in two different places, so here: The Singularity is NOT "the point at which AI outpaces human intelligence." It's the point at which it accelerates beyond our control, typically because it becomes self-improving.

The sky over Austin today is the sort of pristine, deep blue that looks unnatural to me. It's just dark enough that you can believe that space lies beyond it. You never see that color in Maryland, especially not in the summer. The closest you get is on an extremely clear, crisp winter day.

I hate dependency injection, as a requirement, but I just do it organically, where it makes sense, like if I have a data-mocking harness that will also run the same code. I don’t like that some people get puritanical about it.

I am somewhat irritated that all these folks are adding CLIs for agents to interact with their things now when we COULD have been using CLIs as part of our tooling for many years, if they had been available. [glares at Unity]

Andy Burnham is currently being given the access codes for the national computer. It was designed by Charles Babbage inn 1867, is made out of zinc, crystal, and the heart of Lord Nelson, and is located seven miles below the crypt of Westminster Abbey.

Multiple people elsewhere have decided that they need to inform me that the incubation period for cyclosporiasis is "TWO WEEKS." Y'all. Incubation periods are a curve within a range. In this case, the range is 2-14 days. The peak of the curve is somewhere in-between, around one week.

In the past, the game industry has weathered economic downturns pretty well. When it crashed, this was self-inflicted destruction. This trend seems to be holding. The AAA meltdown has largely been the product of choices made within the game industry, itself, rather than external factors.

North Mist Studios is a collection of former BioWare video game developers, including senior narrative team members behind the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series. Now, we're working on a brand new title: The Concierge, a story of Canadian Assassins in a Spy-Thriller Office Drama.

Lots of summer art commission slots open on here right now. Look around. Get some delicious handcrafted art! If you're one of the artists with openings, don't be shy: Feel free to reply here so people can see you. I'll drop a couple that just showed up in my feed.

When there's a political mystery afoot, you can always rely on The Daily Beast to march out an endless parade of "SHOCKING" and "JAW DROPPING" revelations of absolutely nothing.
