The poorest economies in the world are not achieving economic growth. The consequence is that progress against the very worst poverty is coming to a halt. This is one of the worst problems in the world today, but hardly gets any attention.

The benefits of financial support after job loss and why programme design matters more than we think

In January 2022, the US suspended Ethiopia’s eligibility for the African Growth and Opportunity Act, ending Ethiopia’s preferential trade access to the US market, and leading to a major increase in tariffs, the loss of key buyers and, at some companies, mass layoffs. New evidence shows that losing these formal jobs had lasting negative impacts, highlighting the importance of expanding job-loss support and changing its current design.

New WP: “University as a Melting Pot: Long-term Effects of Internationalization” Debates on international students often focus on capacity constraints, funding, or competition. In the paper, I show that the main effects of internationalization on natives are not academic or economic, but social.

For vaccination to be effective, over 90% of kids need to be vaccinated (so diseases can’t spread). The Netherlands doesn’t hit this level for *any* childhood vaccine - and uptake is falling year on year. In my experience the program is laughably bad.
