Because I'm Depressed #653: "On Hate" #becauseimdepressed #comics bcdecomic.com/comics/653/

A four-panel comic.

Panel one: Diego and Eve are sitting on the living room sofa. Diego is slouched back with his arms crossed, looking depressed, while Eve is calmly reading a book. Diego says, “Sometimes I worry that everyone around me secretly -hates- me, and only -pretend- to tolerate me out of politeness.” Eve responds, “A lot of people have that fear. It’s purely irrational.”

Panel two: Diego looks over at Eve and asks, “You guys don’t hate me?” Eve smirks at him and answers, “Diego, we’ve been friends since -grade school-. If we really hated you, we wouldn’t have stuck around for this long.”

Panel three: Diego smiles with relief and says, “Well… thanks. It’s reassuring to hear that.”

Panel four: Diego smiles contently. Eve returns to her book with a scowl and thinks to herself, “-God-, he’s so whiny and annoying. I can’t fucking stand him.”

Dangerous forces may conspire to threaten the Elmwych Paranormal Investigation Club, but thankfully there's still time to enjoy a cosy drink in a quirky venue. All free to read at elmwych.com. Cheers! #supernatural #vampire #comicart

Panel 1. Exterior night view of a bar in a converted Georgian townhouse called Cinnabar. Word balloons point inside.
Griff: So, what do we make of this red guy?
David: Some kind of underworld guardian for our mystery cloaked apparition?
Panel 2. In a corner of the bar the Elmwych Paranormal Investigation Club sit on sofas. Behind them is a large decorative sculpture of a woman, part of the original building.
Dylan: Protecting 'her' is what he said!
Amy: I noticed that! And whatever Wintergarden is, I get the feeling we are stepping into new and dangerous territory here!
Griff: If you can believe a bad tempered, overcooked gargoyle!
Lydia: I think he's cute!
Panel 3. Change of angle. We now see into the main bar behind them.
Amy: He seemed genuine to me. Let's see if we can turn up any leads on Wintergarden.
David: Agreed: We can't walk away from something this big! Let's meet at the Rookery tomorrow night. But we have no idea what we're dealing with now, so...
Panel 4: Change of scene: Evan Doncaster stands outside a large house. In the foreground, a pair of boots are in close up, walking towards him.
David (caption) we need to tread carefully!
SFX: KRUNCH KRUNCH
Doncaster: Ah, Miss Wintergarden! Those local amateurs you mentioned... the so-called 'Elmwych Paranormal Investigation' Club?
Panel 5: Close up of Doncaster, who is whittling a sharpened stake.
Doncaster: I think it's time I paid them a visit!

Yva: You were right- we really needed a night off!
-or more whimsey, at least- a harmless joke here and there, what's the worst that could happen?
The BARTENDER runs up to them.
Bartender: Hey! You can't have kids in here, lady! You gotta go!!

Because I'm Depressed #652: "On College Essays, Pt. 6" #becauseimdepressed #comics bcdecomic.com/comics/652/

A five-panel comic.

Panel one: Wren and Chel walk through their community college campus together. Autumn leaves litter the ground, and other students are walking, talking, studying, or relaxing nearby. Wren asks, “So, didja get in trouble for the A.I. stuff in your literature class?” Chel answers, “I failed the assignment and got lectured, but that’s about it.”

Panel two: Chel looks over at Wren and smiles, saying, “In fact, my professor was really understanding. She could tell writing essays wasn’t working well for me, and she was willing to make so accommodations.”

Panel three: Still smiling, Chel continues, “She knows I like drawing comics, so she’s allowing me to submit my essays in -comic form-, as long as they demonstrate an understanding of the subject and use proper citations. I -love- it! I actually -enjoy- the homework now!”

Panel four: The two continue walking. Chel smiles, while Wren looks surprised.

Panel five: Wren looks at Chel and says, “But… that sounds -way- more time-consuming than just -writing- an essay.” Still smiling, Chel replies, “Oh, it is!”

Because I'm Depressed #650: "On College Essays, Pt. 4" #becauseimdepressed #comics bcdecomic.com/comics/650/

A seven-panel comic.

Panel one: Chel is sitting at her desk in her bedroom. She stares at her laptop with a look of boredom and annoyance, her head resting in her hand.

Panel two: The laptop screen displays a word document. It is titled “The Influence of Politics on the Works of Jorge Luis Borges”. Nothing has been written after the title.

Panel three: Chel continues to stare at her laptop.

Panel four: She lifts her head from her hand and looks aside as she thinks to herself.

Panel five: Chel sits up and begins working away at her laptop. She says to herself, “Maaaaaybe I’ll use A.I. again. Just this one time.”

Panel six: Chel smirks confidently and continues, “But I’ll be -smart- about it this time. Before I submit it, I’ll give it a once-over to make sure it matches my writing style. She’ll -never- know I didn’t write this essay.”

Panel seven: The following day, Chel is once again standing in front of her professor’s desk. The professor, her arms crossed and an irate look on her face, says, “You didn’t write that essay.” Flustered, Chel raises her arms and responds, “I wrote -parts- of it!!”

New character unlocked

Character sheet for Corinne, an anthropomorphic borzo, holding beakers and test tubes in her alchemy lab. The text reads:
Formerly a priestess in the order of the moon goddess Mene, Corinne began a new life as an alchemist and healer in the Whispering Basin.

Finding the day-
to- day work
tedious, Corinne
was delighted
to make
friends with
Yva and hear
her many
stories from the
road.

While her alchemy talents are
superb, the art of potions- mastery is ever dangerous,
and Corinne is as
likely to find
herself putting
out a fire in her lab
as she is to be crafting a healing potion for a weary adventurer.

Never bothered doing stuff like this before, turns out it's super fun!

CHARACTER BIO- Yva, an anthropomorphic hibiscus flower with red petals, yellow skin and a long nose.
Yva is a professional courier, travelling far and wide by foot, mount or ship- all in the name of making a delivery.

As a veteran member of the Couriers' guild, Yva is entrusted with their highest- risk deliveries. The many kingdoms of the occupied lands maintain a fragile peace, with lines of communication often dependent on a courier’s expertise and ability.

Yva will avoid conflict where she can, but is prepared to defend herself with her wits and her razor- sharp firethorn whip.

While her work takes her all across the occupied lands, Yva maintains a small home in the marshy Whispering Basin, near her best friends and favourite tavern.

On the road, she's in search of whatever clues may lead her back to the Valley of Sorrows- the hidden homeland she was driven from as a child.

Because I'm Depressed #649: "On College Essays, Pt. 3" #becauseimdepressed #comics bcdecomic.com/comics/649/

A nine-panel comic.

Panel one: Chel’s professor sits at her desk at the head of the classroom. She smiles warmly and waves at the class, saying, “-Great- discussion today, folks! I’ll see you again on Thursday.”

Panel two: Students begin filing out of the classroom. As Chel walks towards the door, the professor calls out, “Oh, and -Chel?- May I have a word with you before you go?” Chel stops in place, surprised.

Panel three: Chel approaches the desk nervously and says, “Y-Yeah?” The professor puts her hands together with a smile and says, “I just wanted to tell you that I -loved- your essay! It was -very- illuminating!”

Panel four: Chel rubs the back of her neck and smiles awkwardly, responding, “-Oh!- Yeah, well, I just found the topic really fascinating. Once I got started writing, it was hard to know when to stop, y’know?”

Panel five: The professor smiles and looks at the computer monitor on her desk. She says, “It shows! And I’m -really- impressed with the breadth of your vocabulary.”

Panel six: She swivels the monitor around to face Chel and points at the screen, saying, “Like this word here, -‘thermidorean’.- Could you tell me what it means?”

Panel seven: Chel stares as the professor in stunned silence.

Panel eight: Chel looks aside, sweat beginning to drip down her face, as she sputters, “Uh, well. Yeah. It, uh…”

Panel nine: With a weak smile, Chel says, “…It’s like a type of vegetable..?” The professor’s smile vanishes as she swivels the monitor back to its original position, and she says, “Mmmhmm. How about you come back on Thursday with something that -you- wrote.”

A five-panel comic page, depicting LT Laska's fireteam approaching a stone chaos, with some slabs forming a cave of sorts. Because I'm Depressed #648: "On College Essays, Pt. 2" #becauseimdepressed #comics bcdecomic.com/comics/648/

A ten-panel comic.

Panel one: Chel and Wren meet at the plaza outside the cafe where they work. Wren grins and holds up a full plastic bag, saying, “Hey Chel, I got a bunch of expired creamer singles from work! Want to go to the overpass and throw them at Cybertrucks?” Chel frowns and replies, “I can’t… I have an -essay- due tomorrow that I haven’t started yet.”

Panel two: Wren says, “-So?- Just use an -A.I.- to write it for you. It’ll take twelve seconds.” Chel begins, “Wren, I’m not going to—“

Panel three: Wren smiles and pulls up their phone, saying, “Psssh, -everyone- does it! What’s the topic?”

Panel four: Wren looks up at Chel with a smile. Chel looks to the side and hesitantly answers, “Uhhhh. The influence of Jorge Luis Borges’ political views on his writings.”

Panel five: Wren starts tapping on their phone and asks, “Length?” Chel awkwardly rubs her arm and says, “…Four pages, double-spaced.”

Panel six: Wren smiles confidently at their phone and says, “Aaaaannnddd… -There!- All done! I’ll send it to you!” Chel frowns guiltily and says, “I really don’t feel comfortable doing this…”

Panel seven: Wren looks up at Chel and says, “Chel, the essay’s already -written!- We can have fun -now,- you can turn the assignment in -tomorrow,- and your professor will be none the wiser!”

Panel eight: Wren continues, “-Or,- if you’d prefer, you can go home now and waste the rest of your evening writing it yourself.”

Panel nine: Chel looks off to the side as she considers her dilemma.

Panel ten: Chel and Wren are leaning over the rail atop a city overpass, with several creamer singles at their sides. Chel smiles contently and says, “Life is too short for homework.” Wren looks down excitedly at the road below and exclaims, “-Nice!- I got one!”
