Wow. Tough day, already a tough week. Dragged myself to hot yoga in a mega lightning storm and we all came out of class to the most perfect full sky double rainbow 🌈 must be a good sign right?

A whole poem on the seminar I gave on acantharians at UGA today!! 🌊 🤓
Week one of writing silly poetry about all the seminars I attend
It’s a special kind of Sunday scaries the night before the semester starts! Good bye sweet (incredibly, out of control, overwhelmingly busy) summer! Hello new semester teaching a core class that I decided to completely revamp (…again)! #subdayscaries #semesterscaries #oceanography 🌊😭😩
The Kriller Queens (our female led Antarctic research team) reunited this week to synthesize data, present results, plan papers, and write a new proposal (and a Pisco birthday toast!) Work isn’t work with good colleagues and fascinating science questions! #oceanography #nsfunded #polarscience 🌊🇦🇶🐧🦠
Do you work in bioluminescent bays in the Caribbean? Do you love bioluminescent dinoflagellates? Especially Pyrodinium bahamense? Submit abstracts to our session on all things BioBay! Also, this is your reminder to book your biobay tours for after the conference :) 🌊🦠🧪 #oceanography
MICOlab past & current students celebrated @lydiaruggles.bsky.social (my first student 😭) and her marriage this weekend! It was a beautiful ceremony and very fun party. We wish Lydia all the happiness in the universe, including lots of travel and well-calibrated pipettes!! 🎉🎊🍾🌊🦠🤓
Best part of sailing around the San Juans today? Jamie found me a rock that looks like a dinoflagellate ;) 🤓🦠🌊
My perfect, beautiful, best friend Gnasher turns 15 years old today! Born on a farm in the Sandias, I adopted him from a pickup truck in the ABQ Walmart. Since then, we have done everything together: big hikes, long runs, international moves, tide pooling, sailing. I love him x ♾️. #cattledog ❤️❤️
I am defiant. Funding may or may not be there for my group. We will, one way or another, make scientific discoveries. We will get trainees out the door with publications and degrees, and send them on the way to the lives that they want to live. That is my promise to myself. That is my job.
US scientists: Going into fall 26, how are you thinking about things? Following Fall 24 events and a tumultuous spring 25, I remember a convo with a colleague in which we agreed we just needed to wait things out until fall 25 and we'd have some clarity about the landscape (eg for funding). /1
I was excited to hear MySpace is coming back and told my husband, “now that I can actually code my profile is going to be so good!”. He responded, “everyone’s just going to vibe code profiles with Claude and they will be better.” 😭😩
Happy 65th Birthday, August 4th, to the best President in US History. The black man "they" feared, led with humor, dignity & grace for 8 yrs scandal-free, has a beautiful & accomplished family, and is beloved by millions around the world. @barackobama.bsky.social #BarackObama #ThePeoplesPresident
So nice to meet @darkmicrobio.bsky.social and the rest of the peerside group! Hope everyone has an excellent cruise on the Hogarth!
It was great getting to tour @margaretbrisbin.bsky.social's lab today and hear all about her cool research. I love meeting Bluesky mutuals in the wild 🖤
@psaalgae.bsky.social Great news to share from our managing editor Kirsten Muller: New IMPACT FACTOR of ‘Journal of Phycology’ is…….4.3
Somehow strange to be back in Florida after a week in Alaska discussing Algae at the PSA meeting. Juneau was breathtakingly beautiful and the weather was so refreshing (granted we got lucky with some blue skies). Just a fabulous, lovely meeting with excellent scientists. Time is too fast. 🌊🦠🧪🤓
MVP of this year’s Phycological Society of America meeting is Scupper the conference dog. He has been wandering sessions all week, getting treats and pets, and making sure everyone is happy :) 🌊🦠🤓 #oceanography #phycophiles #planktonpups 🐶

Seaweed collections at the Phycological society of America’s annual meeting in Juneau Alaska this week - We went on a morning field trip to the intertidal and needed out over all the diversity we found. Student a pressed and dried samples and made cyanotypes 🤓🦠🌊 #seaweed #algae #oceanography
Second time this happened while working w. an undergrad- they pulled out a hard drive/thumb drive without safely removing/ejecting and I ended up teaching them that the option existed. They had NEVER heard of it. Is it not a thing any more like dbl spaces between sentences? Am I just old? 🤷♀️🌊
When I moved to FL I thought my days of having to earthquake proof labs and offices were done (we have other problems…). But lo and behold - today we were asked to leave the building because of an earthquake! I truly thought a construction vehicle hit the building ;) 🌊🌎🫨
The stupidity never ceases to amaze me. What a tragedy.
The Trump administration is dismantling a $368 million deep-ocean observation system that was put in place a decade ago to monitor coastal environments, marine ecosystems and powerful currents that affect the global climate.
For those who reached out asking how to help: This gofundme is specifically for graduate students who lost personal items, computers, tablets, etc. in the fire. We were told that these items are not retrievable or reimbursable -an added burden for students during a devastating time. Plz share 🌊💙
Lots of people have reached out asking how they can support us after the devastating fire in the MSL building, the heart of @cmarinescience.bsky.social Here’s one way, a GoFundMe organized by our graduate students - gofund.me/4373c6ff3. Please share widely, and thanks for helping our community!

Absolutely devastating times for our college. No way to sum up the extent of this loss. The MSL was the core of our college, a historical building that was the heart of CMS. It contained core labs, equipment, invaluable samples, whole careers. I’m not sure what lies ahead.. but certainly tough times
So this happened today. My office, lab, husbands office, lab… students offices… not great. Tough times ahead
One week extension for abstracts and registration (phew :)) our lab will be presenting several HAB projects - I can’t wait for Alaska!! 🌊❤️🧪🦠🐻❄️ #oceanography #phytoplankton #microbialsky
