Meet Maria, a senior producer on “Marketplace” and a proud union member. Do you know what a public radio producer does? We’ve been at the bargaining table for months, fighting for fair compensation and AI protections for all Marketplace journalists. Stay tuned to keep up with our progress.

It takes a village. ✊ We’re committed to securing fair wages and AI protections for our colleagues.
Alice is a producer for “This is Uncomfortable” and a Marketplace union steward. She was able to get a raise through a formal process we fought for during Marketplace’s first contract negotiations (2022-2023.) Now, APMG wants to cut all union members’ annual raises.
In 2020, the @marketplace.org staff decided to unionize. Six years later, we are in the middle of negotiating our second contract with our parent company APMG. We’ve come a long ways, but we still have progress to make. #WeMakeMarketplace
So proud of Ben!! Everybody go listen to his pod! It is good.
Apple has named Are We Doomed? one of its best podcasts of the year so far. It's shows that are "surprising, hopeful, revealing, haunting, and hilarious" — which may sound counterintuitive if you haven't heard us! But we do things like
The @jbenbradford.bsky.social podcast "Are We Doomed?" did a whole epsiode about sterilizing mosquitos! youtu.be/nBPecQw-11A?...

Google is seeking permission from federal regulators to release up to 32 million sterile mosquitoes in California — a pest control technique meant to quell the spread of an invasive mosquito species that’s been expanding to many parts of the state, including the Bay Area.
If you want to know what the deal is with the screwworm fly found in Texas, we JUST did a whole thing about it: (at 24:52)

This is cool: In less than a month, "Are We Doomed?" has become the #8 science podcast! Nukes, supervolcanoes, rogue AI, little jerk mosquitoes — come have a surprising amount of fun fathoming the abyss! pod.link/1893359212
Today on Are We Doomed? — the mosquito. Should we kill it? You gotta hear Kevin and, most importantly, meet Jerry…

Are we doomed? Or ... do we just feel doomed? I made a new show about that. (Distributed by NPR Network)
So proud of these stories we reported from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We're wrapping up the series today's episode of Marketplace!
In Vietnam, there are two working-age adults for every person over 65 or under 15. In many ways, it’s like the U.S. workforce three to five decades ago. Today on “Marketplace,” host Kai Ryssdal and ADP chief economist Nela Richardson visit Ho Chi Minh City to learn more.
A lot of the political discourse I see on here forgets something essential. The unilateral agency shutdowns, mass firings, ethics rule flouting, etc. are politically acceptable to so many Americans. There’s a reason. You might know it.
Here’s another way to think about it. We import roughly $3.25 trillion in goods every year. Income tax receipts total roughly $2.2 trillion. So we’d need a universal tariff rate of, give or take, 65% to be able to do away w the IRS. But… 1/2
A 10% universal tariff on $3.25 trillion of annual US merchandise imports would potentially raise ~$300 billion. Last year, US personal income tax brought in nearly 30x that.
The WHY is really important. The base of support is not looking at CBS or NYT, or hearing concerns about lawlessness or constitutionality. They are seeing a fundamentally different information stream.
This post will generate angry responses, insults. etc. But important info here. Outside the coasts/Beltway, it appears that SOME of what Trump is doing is generating support, is popular with his base. Politically complicates situation for Dems too. www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-a...
Even after the memo was rescinded, programs are still in limbo "...since then, he said the payment management system of the U.S. Treasury, which he uses to request funds for things like rent and payroll, has not been working" www.wpr.org/news/half-wi...
Half of Wisconsin Head Start programs can’t access needed funds after federal freeze
One Head Start center in Waukesha closed last week, leaving more than 250 families without child care. Director Tim Nolan said the funding freeze hasn't just had ripple effects — it's been a "tsunami....

WIRED is tracking numerous reports of Musk-related shenanigans across the federal govt. We're looking for fed employees open to discussing the activity they're seeing or to help confirm other reports. Anonymity offered. Please use @signal.org (contact dell.3030). Do not use work networks/devices.
Super proud of this series we're doing with Nela Richardson and ADP Research. Working on these stories truly changed my understanding of aging, the labor force, and the future of this economy. Ep 1 here. More stories later this week!
In the U.S., there's an aging workforce in our future. That's why we're visiting Cumberland County, Tennessee, where around a third of residents are over 65. Today on Marketplace.
This is cool! So grateful for people to volunteer their time to provide this service.
Pretty amazing that nonprofit Watch Duty -- which says it has 150 volunteers working around the clock to track wildfires -- has become the most trusted source of information on LA fires. Operated by retired/volunteer firefighters, dispatchers, and reporters. Real people. www.watchduty.org

Increases in worker productivity tend to result in higher wages for workers. So what about jobs that don't get more productive?

Hi #EconSky! Let's see what this hive mind can do. I'm looking for an economist... who is also a classical musician... to speak with me for an @marketplaceapm.bsky.social story about the Baumol effect. Thoughts?

Hi #EconSky, Not sure if the Starter Pack party's over, but I've made an Econ Starter Pack of Starter Packs! 😄 It's a work in progress, so I may have missed some. Let me know if there's anything to add—DMs are open! Thanks for support @economista.bsky.social! docs.google.com/spreadsheets...
Hi Bluesky algorithm! I’m a producer @marketplaceapm.bsky.social covering business and the economy. I’m interested in labor market trends, unsung economic indicators, and the growing overlap between climate change and the economy. Also, I like skiing and cats. ⛷️
