Just received proofs for The Routledge Handbook of Ecotheology. We have an incredible group of scholars and it was a privilege to work with each one. Take a look at the TOC. We’re hoping it’ll be out this autumn.

The discipline of giving up our narrow and self-centred interests in obedience to the leadings of the Spirit may seem oppressive. However, this is the path that leads to real freedom and well-being, not just for us, but for all living things. Tangled Roots, p.125.

The discipline of giving up our narrow and self-centred interests in obedience to the leadings of the Spirit may seem oppressive. However, this is the path that leads to real freedom and well-being, not just for us, but for all living things. In this way, we can move closer to the perfection of unconstrained love and truth. These are the tentative steps leading to a world where goodness is more powerful in shaping people than evil.

Today I went to Quaker meeting for worship for the first time in ages. I spent the hour wrestling to keep my focus on God, using the Lord's Prayer as an anchor. Towards the end of meeting I found myself drawn to the Jesus prayer. I can't say I ever reached a point of stillness, but I'm ok with that.

We *can* all do something (not spark wildfires, for example). But asking individual citizens to solve systemic problems is peak neo-liberalism. Not watering our gardens isn’t going to fix pipes or build reservoirs. Government needs to do more than ban barbecues and send scary alerts. NOW.

We're just putting together our emergency grab bag incase the woods across the road burn, when our phones start screaming the national emergency alert. Now's as good a time as any to reflect on Jesus's words about possessions.

Reflecting that when liberal Quakers see belief in God as optional, we forget that our beliefs about God also shape our beliefs about what it means to be human. No shared theology means no shared theological anthropology. Which makes many ethical questions difficult to engage with as a community.

Every time I teach on the Quaker Renaissance my understanding it shifts. More and more I think the most interesting aspect of this period is how modernity shaped Quaker theology, even though Quakers at the time saw it as a return to their roots (which is itself a modern impulse).

In the 1880s, Quakers in Britain were a broadly evangelical movement, wary of liberal thought. By the 1930s, they had embraced the discoveries of modern theology and science. This course explores how this dramatic shift occurred. Book your place: https://ow.ly/CnBl50ZrV1z

Every now and then I have a phase of listening to Poulenc's opera "Dialogues des Carmélites" on repeat. Such a phase has begun once more. Sometimes I just need all those yummy chords, harp flourishes and ecstatic nun choruses.

1/4 In 1655, Quaker & chemist Edward Bourne witnessed a conversation in which George Fox spoke of 'the Glory of the first body, & of the Egiptian Learning, & of the Language of the birds'. Bourne concluded that Fox had 'Deep & wonderfull understanding in naturall but especially in spirituall things'

"The inner man stood in heaven; his essences were the Paradise; his body was indestructible. He knew the language of God & the angels, & the language of nature, as may be seen by Adam giving names to all creatures, to each according to its own essence & quality' (Jakob Böhme, "Psychologia Vraeria")
