In communist countries, like the one I was born in, distribution of inappropriate, i.e. state uncensored, books was also punishable by law.
"Librarians and booksellers could face up to a year in prison if they’re found to have “distributed” inappropriate material to those under the age of 18. Book displays, book recommendations, and other means of highlighting materials would be folded into the definition of “distributed.”

Finished #ElenaFerrante 's The Days of Abandonment. I know it's been out for over two decades, took me a while! A more intimate story than her Neapolitan novels. Olga was incredibly relatable and I felt so worried for her. Fab translation by Ann Goldstein 👌 Easy 5/5 ##booksky #amreading

So pleased that my short story has been longlisted in the Write By the Sea competition. Last year another story of mine made it onto the shortlist, and while it didn't win, it was subsequently published by The Honest Ulsterman magazine. #booksky #amwriting writebythesea.ie/writing-comp...

An Irish Atlantic Rainforest will be screening in Cinemax Bantry from next Sunday the 2nd of August, with a Q&A after that first showing (film starts 7pm). If you live in counties Cork or Kerry, this is a chance to see a film so beautifully shot, so immersive, it will steal your breath away.
My dentist said today she'd read my story in the Irish Country Magazine a few months ago! I had no idea. Really pleased & celebrating with a strawberry cake. ICM will kindly send me a copy but I need to tell them which issue. Anyone here has 2026 issues and would be happy to look pls? #speirghorm

New door wreath by the very talented Tara in White Dove. I love going to her gorgeous shop in Wickham Way. Pop in if you're around, you won't regret it. I particularly love the dried artichoke in the wreath 😍

Rock legend Patti Smith took a Palestinian flag from an audience member and held it up at her concert in Limerick, Ireland on Tuesday. The star went on to thank Ireland for its solidarity with the Palestinian people and its efforts to call out Israeli abuses of international law. ✊🇵🇸✊🇵🇸✊🇵🇸✊

As a robotics researcher, learning scientist, and author who has followed Realbotix for years, I'm compelled to do a Bluesky thread on this whole pivot that Realbotix is now trying, turning from humanoid sex robots to classroom "education" robots. Buckle up. nysfocus.com/2026/07/14/n... 🧵

on this day in 1799 the "Rosetta Stone is found in the Egyptian village of Rosetta by French Captain Pierre-François Bouchard during Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign." This Stone was a key to translation of Egyptian hieroglyphs, "unlocking 3,000 years of lost history and culture."
