Everyone should be able to access mental health support in their local community, when and where they need it. We hope that the expansion of neighbourhood mental health centres can be a step towards making this a reality. There’s a long way to go. But this is encouraging news.

Wildfires don't just destroy livelihoods & ecosystems. In countries once affected by armed conflict, they can also trigger a hidden danger: explosive remnants of war. Reducing these risks requires sustained clearance efforts, risk education & long-term investment long after the fighting has ended.

Decades after the fighting stops, unexploded bombs, shells, landmines and other explosive remnants of war not cleared can remain in fields, forests and communities for decades. During wildfires, flames and high temperatures may cause munitions to detonate, preventing firefighters from responding to the blaze and creating additional dangers for civilians. The humanitarian impact of armed conflicts can last for generations.

For families separated by armed conflict, even a few minutes of contact can change everything. In 2025, together with Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, we facilitated nearly 4,000 phone calls every day to reconnect separated families.

We welcome the Government’s call for evidence on the professions and roles which will in future be allowed to describe themselves as 'nurses'.  We have long called for the title of ‘nurse’ to be protected in law.  This will be achieved through long-awaited changes to modernise our legislation.

Born from the lessons of war and mass displacement, the Convention remains a landmark commitment to uphold the rights, dignity and protection of refugees. Protecting people forced to flee armed conflict and/or persecution is not only a legal obligation; it is a humanitarian imperative. This anniversary is also a reminder that more needs to be done to address the root causes that force people to leave their homes and to prevent further suffering.
