This sent me Googling about Swiss Family Robinson, and I ended up with so many TILs: • There was a TV movie of SFR in the 1950s starring Dennis Hopper & Patti Duke • Lost in Space was based on SFR • A Canadian and a US TV version of SFR both were aired in mid-1970s • The US version has Helen Hunt.

So after Robinson Crusoe was written it inspired an entire genre of people stranded from society called “Robinsonades” and the guy who wrote Swiss Family Robinson couldn’t even be bothered to come up with a different name for his. It’s like calling your vampire novel Doug Twilight

Good for Korea’s Culture Minister, Chae Hwi-young, sticking up for freedom of speech. Korea does have a history of letting politics and public sentiment affect these decisions sometimes … but good to see him take a stand. en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN2026...

A glowing stellar nursery 👶⭐ Webb’s infrared sensitivity has revealed the protostars & stars of NGC 7129, a stellar nursery that lies 3,300 light-years from Earth. In the centre, lies the massive star LkH(alpha) 234, which has carved into its cloudy surroundings 👉 www.esa.int/ESA_Multimed... 🔭 🧪

A young star cluster filled with many stars that display Webb’s unique eight-pronged diffraction pattern. At its center is a yellow star which sports the largest diffraction pattern. To the left of the star, there is a region filled with yellow dust and gas that extends from the star to the left border of the image. This yellow region extends from the bottom, covering about two-thirds of the image. The yellow region has several blue stars of different sizes embedded within. The top third, which lies outside of the yellow region, holds a few bright protostars, within dense gray gas. Those stars illuminate the gas, making it appear blue. A few red outflows from other protostars are visible above this grayish-blue region. To the right of the central star, there is a clumpy, flame-like plume of red dust and gas with protostars that emit a soft white light within. The plume is surrounded by more dense gray gas and dust. There are several background galaxies strewn throughout the image. Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI; Image Processing: A. Pagan (STScI)

Just watched the excellent HERETIC. Hard to think of an actor who’s had a more interesting career arc than Hugh Grant. Funny that the FOUR WEDDINGS guy has become such an excellent villain/scumbag.

The Fact Sheet is out, and the Alaska LNG project looks less concrete than the White House remarks suggested earlier today. Commerce Secretary Lutnick spoke of “just over $50 billion invested in Alaska for the Alaska LNG project," but that figure does not appear in the document.

Fact Sheet: Korea and the United States Announce Historic Strategic Investment Projects

The announcement of the strategic investment project (“Project Star”), the Korea - U.S. Nuclear Power Plant Projects (“Project Power”), and a plan to work together on the Alaska LNG project (“Project ...

Ah, one of my favorite times of year in Korea — when the news dutifully reports on travel times during the Chuseok holidays, despite the holidays not having especially bad traffic for years.

Not that he asked my opinion, but if I were Will Stancil, I think I’d divide my Bluesky presence into two — a new, mostly anonymous account for shooting the shit and talking about whatever, and saving his famous account for political, on-brand talk with minimal engagement (maybe turn off replies).

This Korea-Japan gold-medal game about to start in the Asia Games … There’s definitely a lot more, uh, genetic diversity on the Japan team. Traditional Japanese names like “Kirk” and “Schafer”. …not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Much like Gresham’s Law for currencies — “Bad money drives out good” — I’m increasingly believing that’s true for news and content in general. I’m thinking that we’re going to need a walled-off, well-moderated internet because slop (AI and human) is overwhelming my news feeds.

This is a pretty amazing article. It gets a little preachy at times. But the goods in the article don’t need it. A whole operation based on buying up long running websites, firing all staff and pumping them full of mountains of AI slop. Fascinating. A sort of boiler room ai dystopia.
