Itβs been years since Iβve encountered a bear while walking a trail. This morning, I met two. Iβm guessing they were siblings who had recently left their mom. The first one took off, but this one decided I was a curiosity worth exploring, so I had to stand my ground. This is after I scared it back.πΏ

I am over the moon. I stalked this ruffed grouse for over half an hour, only moving when he drummed so that I could slip close enough through the tangle to get a relatively clear shot. This was filmed with my Z8 and 180-600 lens, hand-held while in a full squat over wet ground. #GlobalBigDay #birds
Each night of our aurora tours in Churchill is spent in a different location. This yurt just inside the treeline is one of my favourite places. We had a spectacular show there the other night. #aurora #northernlights
Of the three seasons during which I guide tours in Churchill, #aurora season is by far of the most stressful, because we have no control over what people are coming up to see. Tonightβs show was a big relief and a huge excitement for my guests. Now I can sleep. π
A few more moments from last week's time in Churchill. Hoping for just as good luck next week. #aurora.
Turn the sound on to listen to why I do what I do. Nothing makes me happier than listening to people experience the majesty of the #aurora for the first time. We had an amazing night starting with a seven course meal and ending with this show.
GLORIOUS pelican roll this morning! Thank you, bird! πͺΆ
The next shot in this sequence. Look out below. #birds πΏ

Fog and frost on the lake this morning. Itβs an absolute perfect winter day.
Very foggy and frosty this morning. Made for a lovely walk.
My backyard right now. Just put this on loop if you need something to calm you. βοΈ
Another pine grosbeak just after take off. They look so hefty, but are excellent fliers. I'm pretty sure most of the bulk is feathers to keep them warm. #birds
Okay - something fun to hopefully brighten your day. I was so excited when I spotted these track on the side of the road yesterday. Does anyone want to guess who made them? (answer will follow later).
I took this photo this morning, and I'm so in love with it - the timing, the focus, the colour. I can't quite believe it worked so well. The new camera definitely helped. Also, she's so cute and chubby! #birds πΏ
A brief moment with a few of my neighbours this morning. The deep cold didnβt seem to be bothering them. Deer grow a dense coat for winter and their legs and ears have a counter current system where the blood vessels keep the heat in the core of their body. #mammals πΏ
I will never get tired of looking out the window and seeing these brilliant birds. - Pine Grosbeak #birds πΏ
We're in the middle of a little blizzard, so I'm bringing some sunshine into the day with a look at the great gray owl I met last weekend. Hoping for similar luck this weekend. #birds πΏ
A bright, crisp sunrise over Lake Winnipeg this morning. Perfect conditions for a walk.
I came across this pileated woodpecker this morning. While they often work on the base of trees, I was not expecting to see her head popping out from behind a pile of snow. #birds
The pine grosbeaks decided to pose for me this morning. They are a welcome flash of colour on a grey day. #birds
I had an incredible moment today. I found great gray owl hunting along the road. I'm always very careful to keep my distance and make sure the owl is not distracted by me. I was doing well until I stepped out of the car when it was deeper the woods. It suddenly landed right over my head. 1/2 #birds
Sunrise walk on the lake. Looks like another planet.
Still gong through the highlights of 2025. I'm still in February. We had some amazing #aurora evenings when I was up in Churchill guiding tours.
A solstice sunrise over Lake Winnipeg.
If you're crazy about bike riding it may be considered a cycle logical issue. #DadJokes
